Broken water pipe would be another scenario where this would be the better option. Learning a ton from this channel, keep it up!!

It might be very useful in humid southern climates in crawl space. Humidity has a way in my area of causing insulation to get soaked and fall out of sub flooring spaces. It also contributes to crawl space mold issues. How about the cost comparison?

I have used Roxul in my last 2 builds, and 2 renovations going back to 1999. I will never use fiberglass again. Cheaping out on insulation is just dumb. It's the cheapest material in a house build, yet it is far more valuable than it's cost. One thing not mentioned (the reason I started using it...Canadian prairies) is that it doesn't compress or sag like fiberglass (irregardless of moisture), which maintains the R value that you're paying for. Contractors don't EVER install insulation properly either...I always do it myself.

Turns out though mold grows quite well, on dust which will accumulate on any fibrous insulation-wood, glass, wool, hemp etc.

very good points for reason to switch to mineral wool

Re r factor, mineral wool retains its r rating over time, doenst get wet, collapse/compress …but it’s 3x the cost….

If I wasn't using mineral wool everywhere in a house, I'd at least use it in the locations most likely to see water leaks --- floors under bathrooms and laundry areas, walls behind tub and showers, and walls below windows. Closed cell spray foam isn't harmed by water either but it doesn't allow water to drain or dry out the way mineral wool does.

As early as the 90’s
Production started in Denmark in the late 1930’s
I get that you were probably talking US but the history of Rockwool is older

I'm really curious, do the name brand options provide a better option than something more generic?

He should have weighed each piece before and after placing under water to give more supportive information at water retention

Yes rockwool doesn't abosrb as much water as fiberglass, but what you didn't mention here is that rockwool stil absorbs some amount of vapors/humidity/water, and once it absorbs even a small amount it can't let to go as easy as fiberglass does. If a builder didn't install rockwool tight enough even in a few areas, these areas will become cold bridges, this means that at these cold bridges the cold and hot air are going to meet and condense which means that the vapor from is going to become water. Once it becomes water there it takes much more time for rockwool to dry out comparing to fiberglass which leads to mold formation in the areas where it absorbed water. Once you have mold on the beams surface your house is going to start roting slowly.

I find it to not be as itchy as the fiberglass. Fiberglass can have the vapor barrier face built in which mineral wool won’t have so you have to put up a vapor barrier separately here in my climate zone

whats the difference between rockwool and mineral wool?

Could you speak to the cost? I have heard that insulation contractors buying in bulk from distributors are able to buy insulation for much cheaper than an individual homeowner can. The result is that it might be less expensive (or only a bit more) to have an insulation contractor buy AND install the insulation than to go out and buy it yourself.

Is the mineral wool totally waterproof? So it won't absorb any water ?

So dont use spray on or foam insulation?

You also don’t have the risk of this stuff destroying your lungs

Very dusty installation, well worth it, sound proofing is unnerving.

be careful don't interchange "mineral wool" with "rockwool/roxul" similar but different products.
