Reactive arthritis is a seronegative spondyloarthropathy that occurs after a bacterial infection. It is an immune-mediated condition involving activation of T lymphocytes that attack parts of the patient’s joint. Reactive arthritis can progress to become another condition known as Reiter’s syndrome, which has a triad of signs and symptoms. In this lesson, we discuss reactive arthritis, including the bacterial infections that can cause it, the pathophysiology behind it, the signs and symptoms, how it’s diagnosed and how it’s treated.
