'Rooster Crow Medley' by Uncle Dave Macon (Sally Goodin)

I learned "Sally Goodin" from a North Carolina fiddler whose name I never knew. I used to play it on the banjo in gDGBD. Later, I heard Aaron Stephens play "Rooster Crow Medley" by Uncle Dave Macon, which is the same tune with some different words. Here, I've tuned my fretless minstrel banjo to ~ eAEAB to follow Macon's arrangement; however, Macon was probably tuned gCGBD for his recording.

I cant even describe the feeling of this, and the west virginia/blueridge mountains, just driving past. The history and dread are so humbling and beautiful. There was so much death in old Appalachia. People had so many kids to carry out thwir dutys, whether it be the coal mines, lumberjacks, farmers, anything to keep the family legacy alive. And who better to hear the history of their music than CLIFTON HICKS!!

Simply amazing. In my estimation, Uncle Dave Macon’s songs are the musical equivalent of an antidepressant. Just so much soul, life, and straight up fun to them. Animo Et Fide!

I also wanted to add. You know how you felt you had to change that one part. Well after a bit, i believe this tune is written in first person. "Cold frosty mornin, feelin mighty good, axe on my shoulder cut a stick of wood". Next verse, " N****r on the hillside hewin up a log, frog in the millpond barkin like a dog". Roosters seeds n cookin. Randy stuff.😉
