This is called a prepared piano. Its a really cool thing. Usually you put in screws and nails, but if you love your piano, yoga mat is the way to go. 🙃

Prepared piano is the absolute best! My favorite is putting small coins between the strings at the mid-high register, always gives me gamelan vibes :)

I'm old-ish. My favorite band growing through my teens was Sonic Youth. They use to alert their guitars in all kinds of experimental ways. I LOVE seeing alterations to a piano!

I was classically trained on piano but didn't have the guts to "experiment" with the family piano.

If you selectively place the mat to dampen the strings, you could purposefully bring out certain harmonics.

My only advice as a piano tech with this is
Don't touch the strings with your fingers, it will tarnish them and keep them from lasting

This is why I love a synthesizer. Probably 100 things I can do to 1 piano sound. With hundreds of different sounds, you have thousands of possibilities.
