About the film:

The Emmy-award winning Connected documentary follows the seemingly impossible separation of conjoined twins, Pedro and Augusto.

The 5-year-old boys came to Dayton Children’s from Guatemala in July 2021 joined at the top of the head with a 90 degree turn, classified as craniopagus O’Connell class III.

The condition is incredibly rare with an estimated 50 craniopagus twins born every year, with only an estimated 15 of those surviving more than a few months.

The documentary chronicles the two years that surgeons and staff spent preparing and executing the series of separation surgeries for this rare and complex condition.

The documentary was produced and directed by Flyback Productions, a Chicago-based production company.

What an incredibly complex procedure! I can't fathom the amount of thinking, considerations, consultations, care coordination, etc. Planning it down to scrab colors of grey and blue, signifying the patients team members are responsible for. How many sleepless nights, just thinking if specific method or tool is the best choice. This blows my mind! My hat is off. Absolutely incredible!
I LOVE how throughout the documentary the importance of each and every member of the team was acknowledged! Together everyone achieves more!
When those few steps were taken during PT ..to see the progress with movement, speech...wow!

Thank you to all the providers involved in care of these boys! I wish these boys to continue with their progress, and hope to see some updates in the future.

I'm from Idaho, USA. When they showed some of the countryside around the hospital, the land was so flat that I felt disoriented. In the valleys between mountain ranges here it's still not flat like that! My mom, sister and daughter in law were all dedicated nurses. I love watching this!

God Bless the Drs, APRNS, RNS, CRNAS and the remaining staff I did not mention. I am an RN, you all are angels of God. I can imagine the difficulties that went into the planning, preparing, and actual 3 days of surgery. I’m just sad these boys did not go home to their mom and I pray she does visit these precious little boys. ❤❤❤

I cannot imagine the love, concern, desires for the children, the separation of Mom from her regular support community. Culture shock, feeling inadequate, overwhelmed, and super stressed. No, I really don’t think it is our opinion about what Mom thought or felt is any of our business. We pray for all involved-including Mom and the twins. I really don’t have any idea how I would begin to cope whereas the current caregivers have resources way beyond my capabilities.
Thoughtful, intentional kindness costs us nothing but putting others first.
I hope and pray all are well and content as they navigate their lives.
Are there any recent updates? It’s the 3rd of Feb.2025.

I hope that the boys at least have some kind of relationship with their mother, and that they continue to have good quality of life. The doctors did intense and incredible work, and I don’t want to diminish their accomplishments. But I’ll admit, it was tough to see the boys level of intellectual function and interactivity before surgery versus after. Much has been lost in the process.

As a surgical OR tech I wish they had not blurred the surgical site. It would have been most educational to see that. However, thank you for what you did reveal. An education in medicine and humanity.

None of this would be possible without the amazing technology of MRI, and the three-dimensional imaging used to create real-life images of the boys’ brains.

I was living in Utah at the time Lisa and Elisa Hansen, (who were born conjoined at the head), from the time they were seperated, to now it's amazing how much seperation surgery has progressed. Both girls grew to adulthood but now both have passed away. Personally I feel that this way of doing the surgery bit by bit instead of all at once, is the best way of going about it.
