Beyond Sol | A Mission to Proxima Centauri in KSP / RSS / RO

We've got a Discord server now!

Proxima Centauri is the nearest star to our own, Sol. With a 4.2 lightyear gulf separating Earth and the rocky exoplanet Proxima Centauri b, traversing such a massive distance is substantially more difficult than simple interplanetary missions. Proxima b, in this video, is theorized to have a thin atmosphere, be slightly larger than Earth, and have a very flattened, weathered surface due to the lack of tectonic activity and near-tidal locking to its home star.

Filming this mission has been a journey in and of itself. I've actually filmed 3 other, unique, ready-to-release versions of this mission, but I decided not to release them because I simply didn't believe that they lived up to my standards. I'm really happy to release this one and I hope you enjoy it.

Ground operations on Proxima b were inspired by @reach6898 in their Proxima colonizing mission.

Kerbal Space Program 1.12.3
Mods (non-exhaustive list):
Real Solar System (Changes the stock system into our own)
Real Exoplanets (Adds confirmed exoplanets)
Realism Overhaul (Makes things significantly more realistic)
RSSVE (Better visuals)
Parallax by Linx
The Near Future suite by Nertea
Stockalike Station Parts Redux by Nertea
Far Future Technologies by Nertea
Planetside Exploration Technologies (Rover parts)
KSP Interstellar Extended
KAS/KIS (Altering crafts in-flight)
Extraplanetary Launchpads (Building things offworld)
DeepFreeze (Freezes crew for the journey to avoid life support stress)

Music used:
The Seeding - Geoff Knorr
The Titan - Andreas Waldetoft

The flag used in this mission is from Dermot McDonagh:

Disclaimers:
The debug menu was used during this mission to avoid nasty bugs caused by being on an exoplanet among other problems, though rest assured that the only times I used the debug menu were for getting around these bugs. Additionally, I custom-configured many parts to function properly with Realism Overhaul and to meet the requirements for my mission. Do not expect your game to behave the same way with the same mods I used.

Also I'm aware that in the thumbnail I wrote "Nearest Star," what I mean is the nearest star to us other than Sol.

Do not reupload this video near to or in its entirety on other platforms without my written consent.

I've been getting a LOT of questions about torque cancellation from the rotating habitats, so here's why they both rotate in the same direction:
Both habitats are from a mod, and the mod includes counterrotating counterweights on each of the centrifuge parts, individually canceling out the torque on each centrifuge. There was no option to remove the counterweights on the parts, so I didn't bother making both centrifuges counterrotating as it didn't matter torque-wise and was easier to launch.

Here’s me being proud of finally pulling off a crewed Duna landing and return in stock… this is just insane

Nice to see Stellaris fleshing out the early game more!

This video inspired me to try this game.
In 4 days I went from barely able to get in orbit. To sending a crazy cool event horizon style ship to the moon. Dropping a lander. Getting back to moon orbit. Docking. Going home and at the same time rendezvous and docking with my 2 part space station around kerbin....

Still inspires.

That is literally insane. Eyes just wide open the entire time. KSP players are really built different.
Why is this video so underrated?

WOW, interstellar missions in ksp are just something else, good job!

To think, this is all possible if we spend our whole defense budget on NASA instead of the military industrial complex

As a 73 year old who has been playing KSP since its release and still has problems docking anything in space, I am super impressed with your ship and your movie. Well done and thankyou for taking the time and trouble.

I can't even imagine the amount of quick saves that were loaded during this mission because of Kraken attacks.

Just shock and awe. Looks like hundreds of hours sitting, tweaking retrying, calculating, thinking, engineering, planning. What the actual. I remember how I felt like a little kid getting his first toy when I first time managed to land on Mun, then on Minmus, then building a working rover and landing it on Mun and Minmus and then... When I actually did my first rendezvous mission and started to use landers rather than stages to land on bodies, and not to mention how my satelite network evolved as well. From antennas stuck up a basic module to sophisticated carrier rockets with 3 satellites to achieve a triple geo-stationary network... My best achievement in that playtime was to send a satellite carrier to Duna in preparation for a landing mission. I never got to that landing mission before I quit playing the game. I just needed a change, didn't have what it takes to play so long in one game even if it's fun. Respect to you though!

I really need to see a long let's play of how this is done. It can be 20hrs long. I would watch it.

Up ahead was Pandora. You grew up hearing about it, but I never thought I'd be going there.

I love it when instead of sending dozens of research missions you jump straight to colonization.
Saves a lot of time.

This is freaking incredible and must have taken hundreds of hours to do. Well done!

Me, at half the video: imagine if this turns out as a base, would be cool
me, 3 minutes later: DUDE NOO WAAYYY

I have just spent 12.06 absolutely mesmerised by this, I just cannot imagine the time and effort you must have put into this project fantastic work well done.

Imagine being the astronaut and asking yourself "Now that that's done, how do we get back?".

Amazing work, looks like how I imagine KSP2 in my mind. The bar for KSP2 is even higher now!
