Conservatives slam Trudeau, Liberals for PBO “gag order” on carbon pricing analysis

During question period in the House of Commons on Tuesday, Conservative Party of Canada leader Pierre Poilievre and several of his cabinet members criticized Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and the Liberal government for allegedly placing a “gag order” on the Parliamentary Budget Officer (PBO) to stop him from sharing findings on the economic impact of their carbon pricing initiative.

“The vast majority of people are worse off under a carbon pricing regime than without. This is partly because of the economic cost that the carbon tax imposes,” Poilievre said. “One of our members for Winnipeg asked the PBO if the government had done an economic analysis of the cost, and he said yes, but they are blocking its release — referring to it as a gag order. Why the carbon tax cover up?” he asked.

“The PBO admitted that he made a mistake with his carbon pricing report using incorrect analysis and modeling,” Trudeau said in response, “We will continue to put money in people's pockets and fight climate change,” he added, further reminding Parliament that a secondary carbon pricing rebate will be sent to Canadians on July 15.

“If that was true, [Trudeau] would simply release the report with the real costs of the carbon tax that he's been hiding,” Poilievre responded.

PBO Yves Giroux suggested the federal government was restricting him from sharing the economic analysis — which he has seen but has not been released. “We’ve been told explicitly not to disclose and reference it,” Giroux said during a Monday Finance Committee meeting.

You don't even have to convince Canadian families that they're paying more. It doesn't depend on some esoteric modelling projection from some bureacrat who gets paid more than they deserve. Families have to balance budgets. They don't seem to balance themselves, particularly when you personally have to feel the consequences of reckless spending. We know. We see our own bank accounts, we have to analyze our finances. A majority, a hefty majority, of Canadians do NOT want the carbon tax.

Trudeau is beyond belief. A Nova Scotian friend of mine paid $900 for his winter propane gas supply, plus $120.00 carbon tax, then $156.00 HST on top of that. So they paid HST on the carbon tax!
