Three Survivors Remember Auschwitz, 80 Years Later

As young teenagers, Ruth Cohen, Steven Fenves, and Irene Weiss were deported from their hometowns to Auschwitz-Birkenau. There, they were separated from family members before being subjected to forced labor and harrowing conditions. In Steven’s words, “life was learning to die.” More than 1.1 million people were killed at Auschwitz, of whom nearly one million were Jewish men, women, and children.

In their first recorded conversation together, these three survivors, who volunteer at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, reflect on their time at Auschwitz so that we might learn from their experiences of the deadly consequences of unchecked hatred and antisemitism. Together, we can defend the truth of the Holocaust.

Don't stop sharing and teaching this events because people seem to have forgotten and many don't even know the history. Sad times right now really sad.

My grandfather saw one of these camps. He had tears in his eyes when he told me what he witnessed, 50 years afterwards. He asked me to study and learn so that it wouldn’t be repeated.

It’s International Holocaust Remembrance Day 2025, I just want to say to the Holocaust survivors, thank you incredibly for sharing these horrific stories and memories and I’m so so sorry that you’ve been through such atrocious and tragic events and experiences… For this year, It will hopefully be a better future and its insane that it’s been 80 years; 8 decades since then… now I wish you all to stay safe and well. Thanks for sharing these.

I am so grateful to these beloved human beings, for having the courage to mentally go back to their experiences of hell on earth, to tell us firsthand what they saw, heard, smelled, and felt. I am so grateful they survived. I hope each was able to have families - children and grandchildren. God bless them all. ❤️🌹

So amazing they survived. In their 90’s they are very articulate. I am so so sorry they went through this horrible time. I thank everyday that my grandparents left Europe just before the War started. They had a very hard time in North America upon arrival, but any of that pales in comparison to the horror to what happened to these individuals.
