I'm actually reading How to win friends and influence people right now, but I was already doing this beforehand- I just write names down on a certain app and where I know that person from/ a fact about the person it allows me to connect with people better.

I hear it too often "I'm not good with names" it's a problem that people regard as not being that big of a deal but it is.
You never hear someone say "I'm good with names" or have the solution to that problem, so it's great to see when people learn how to do this.

The next level is remembering a client's children's names. In business, it cements a relationship.

I too make a habit of remembering peoples names. I am also very comfortable asking "please remind me of your name" or "nice to see you again I'm Jennifer, I've forgotten your name" Always friendly and with a smile its never awkward and I believe it comes across as being very important to me, which it is.

One time I forgot a guy’s name. I just said hi and called him you. All of a sudden he seemed to be very happy. His name is Yu

I’ve long used the technique you mentioned of saying their name back to them when given to you, but your idea about actually writing down names, and even organizing them based on places you visit frequently, is brilliant! It’s touches like these that take somebody from polite to refined

May i add a suggestion to your third method - i always add a persons detail to the Microsoft Outlook App and then check their profile on linked in (or facebook if in a social setting) i then download their picture to Outlook - so if i am ever unsure of their name i can check it against the photo - this has saved me on many occasions

00:00 🧠 Fully engage when someone shares their name; it's crucial for building relationships.
02:03 🗣 Use repetition and immediate application of a person's name to reinforce memory.
03:12 🤔 Create associations with names to aid in memory retention, even if they're nonsensical.
04:37 📝 Maintain a name list with brief descriptions for long-term recall and social confidence.
06:41 👋 Subtly remind others of your name if needed; it's polite and helps avoid awkward situations.

These are *all* very good methods, writing down their names and facts about them, too.
"Would you mind spelling that?" I sometimes use.
My working life is usually in foreign countries, and after meeting people, I rehearse imagined conversations with them afterwards.
Owning up early if you've forgotten can be done with grace, better than dodging it.

Great video. Whenever I go into a restaurant that i visit regularly I always get the name of the owner or individual greeting me. So that I know who they are the next time I come. It’s amazing to go into a restaurant and walk up that person, same their name, shake their hand and say hey how are you Joe, Harry whatever good to see you again. They always remember you afterwards.

Whenever I call or visit a business, I introduce myself by my first name, but very often, later in the interaction, the representative will ask for my name again, seemingly completely forgetting that I had already given it to them. On the other hand, when somebody gives me their first name, I greet them by that name immediately and make a point to remember it for later. Forgetting somebody’s name when they just gave it to you can really sour an otherwise positive interaction. It just says that you don’t really care

I have a different but related problem: I have difficulty recognizing faces. I find that I often have to meet someone multiple times before I can recall that I have met them before. THEN I can worry about their name.
I used to work in industrial sales, where I would travel to our clients’ place of work. I remember one time visiting a customer for the second time. I had the call report from our first meeting a few months earlier and so I knew the guy’s name and what we had talked about. I walked into the office and there were 4 men sitting there… and NONE of them looked familiar. It was quite embarrassing to try to address them and scramble to figure out which of them was the one I should already know.

I’m one of those people that’s “bad with names, ” and I’ve found myself writing them down too, usually as soon as I can after meeting them. I usually try to write the name, where they are from if they are from out of town, and what they do. So like “John, barista at X, from Scotland.”
