The Odysseus mission failed successfully

Things to learn from this mission: 1. Build the next lander shorter and wider (i.e., a lower center of gravity). 2. Improve the software so it can spot and avoid rocks, holes, and depressions. 3. Gain better control of the lander's velocity so it can touch down at the engineers' desired speed.

Billion of dollars price but look at the camera resolution. Speechless

Early on, they let it slip that a technician failed to remove a safety on the primary landing system.

I wonder how the Soviets managed to soft-land their Luna probes (Luna 9 in 1966!) without LIDAR, high-performance on-board computers, etc., keep them from tipping over, and even operate 2 rovers on the moon.

Imagine a space mission where you go over countless checklist before launch only for someone to have forgotten to turn a switch. Can't believe we were able to land flawless with one try same environment 50yrs ago with a flimsy lander.

Engineering... That was a low speed crash.

Top Management... A triumphant success! (How are my stock options doing?)

We can put multiple rovers and a helicopter on mars but we can’t land upright on the moon?

Poor engineering, poor quality control, poor leadership and management = crash landing

The instrument that calculated speed and altitude malfunctioned.
They had NASA perform an extra orbit to give them time to come up with a convoluted solution that gave them a rough estimation. They knew it would miscalculate.
The descent engine cut off prematurely so they dropped faster than they should have. They were also moving 2 meters a second laterally. Subsequent high res images of the spacecraft show that when they landed, one of the legs was broken completely off so that's why it is in its side. To me, the legs appear a bit dainty and for the next mission perhaps should be made more robust. The malfunction of the altitude and speed probably won't recur as no doubt that portion of hardware and software will be scrutinized. At least they can communicate to and receive comms from it. They can still get images and some of the many instrument packages onboard can still perform their experiments.

Why were they in such a hurry to land on the moon after arrival in the lunar orbit? They already discovered issues and doing few more through checking, testing and a day or two could have helped them firm up the software and maybe calibrate etc...why hurry?

Chinese be landin' on the dark side of the moon like straight-up bosses, ya hear? Four legs planted firm on that lunar surface, holdin' it down.

They keep patting themselves on the back and calling this failure a success?...go away and hire a better private company that can design a lander that won't fall over....jeez

Even my $15 toy car (over 20 years old) is capable to correct itself and flip over and back to its normal position.

It was just bad design. No excuses, please.

In Jan 2019 chinese Cheng 4 landed in the South Pole-Aitken Basin on the FAR SIDE of the Moon that was still unexplored by landers. The whole operation was coordinated via communication relay satellite. And the chinese lander deployed a robotic rover on the surface. I wonder if USA/NASA is able to perform such mission at this stage.

If they had had a last check then the switch would have been turned off. Then the landing would probably have been done properly. what a shame.

The mission was succeed, but disappointed, I would say. It looked like the lander jumped from a moving train, landed with a broken leg. it was caused by a regretable mistake, forgot to turn on a switch before leaving home. Also, the problem was found only a hour before landing, absolutely a great hollywood moive story line.

Apollo had 5 moon landing missions, all 100% success.

Imagine if everyone found out there is not 1 actual real photo of "earth, " and yet they think we travel to the moon😂
