The Lilium Jet 5-seater technology demonstrator

In 2017 we revealed something the world had never seen before, a two-seater, all-electric, jet-powered vertical take-off and landing aircraft.

We're taking it to the next level with the maiden flight of our five-seater prototype. The Lilium Jet takes us another huge step towards making electric regional air mobility a reality.

Too much emotion and too little engineering in this video.

I would much rather hear the sound this thing makes instead of gassy music.

Why does it take a room full of people ( 1:59 ) to lift an aircraft off the ground?

Seemed like a pretty shaky takeoff. Was there weight onboard to simulate 5 passengers and full battery load?

Wow, they made a small aircraft that can hover for 15 seconds, and a sleek video praising themselves! The future is here!

It looks like they (ingineers ) really surprised that this thing is flying :)

You guys are incredible. I am proud that we have geniuses like you in Germany.

Congratulations! But please let us hear the real sound, I love the real sound of jets, and I very much dislike bombastic music. How do 36(!) Electric Ducked Fans inside an enclosure sound like? -impressive for sure, but painfully or kind of soft, I am curious.

I liked the foam blocks taped onto the end of the wings. Glad you didn't need them!

let's not judge them.. Maybe they are small budget and this was very important point for them to see that they can continue working. Why all the hater comments? What did you do this morning that might be better and more cheerful than this?

I am amazed at the amount of money obviously being invested at Lilium. Just look at all those employees, and still there is not a product to sell. My question would be, "Are you expecting a revolution in battery development?" Because a 5-seater with VTOL capabilities is going to need a whole lot of power. Today's batteries are not at the point where they could provide that power, for any sustained period of time. The investors must either know what battery technology is coming, or they are just wildly speculating.

Congrats to the visionary team at Lilium for truly ushering in the next era of travel. Many Vtol concepts out there, from both large companies and small startups all pursue that super sized drone idea, all complete with dangerous high velocity multi exposed rotors, all designs carrying no consideration for safety due to proximity, niether for occupants nor bystanders. The Lilium Jet's simplistic yet brilliantly conceived encased multi turbo fan design eliminates all such concerns even in the event of a major accident. Their design is so safe it allows for close proximity operations even with the aircraft powered up. Its been the one factor that has always stood out for me regarding the Liliums design in contrast to all other concepts out there. With Lilium, upon seeing the design for the first time, it just looks right, correct, and it screams the future. Other Vtol concepts carry with them the look of failure, too complex, half concocted or an accident just waiting to happen. When i first saw Lilium i did think the multiple mini turbo fans to be a bit odd, but when i took the time to consider its functions, how they were being used, the redundancy and obviously the levels of safety, i found myself a bit taken back. How such a simplistic design, almost child-like in concept had not been considered years prior. Its just brilliant. Simple and brilliant. Congrats to Lilium for a job more than well done, groundbreaking. I'll be looking to see the Lilium Jet forfill that Blade Runner dream we've all been waiting for.

I can't believe how many people are gushing how awesome this was! P.T. Barnum sure was correct!

Can this thing even withstand 15 mph crosswind?

Herzlichen Glückwunsch dem gesamten Team!

This reminds me of the guy who made a sleek video after he “invented” a real life hover board from Back to the Future. It hovered all right...at 160dB, for 10 minutes, as long as the operator wasn’t more than 150lbs, and couldn’t move forward. Ah, but the video had uplifting music and lots of soft shots over self-congratulatory text about making the future!

But does it actually fly forward? Didn't look very stable while it hovered in the air neither lol....

Not convinced by what I've just seen. Smiling faces and nice video shots are not enough. Come back to reality or lose your money.

Being an aerospace engineering enthusiast, I see it as a great achievement to start with. Ignore the Naysayers and keep improving your aircraft. All the best from DLR

there's no video of this product with a genuine engine sound and cockpit view. Go ahead and try to find one, you'll never find one anywhere.
