I will also talk about my 30+ years of experience wild camping. Is it safe to wild camp in the UK? Will you get shot at? maybe! will some one try to get in your tent while you sleep maybe! but hey its safe i am still alive after hearing kinds of goings on outside the tent but the truth is after 30+ years of wild camping i have come to no harm i just had a few random strange experiences which have not put me of atall. It is safe for a man or woman to wild camp in the UK yes it is. I talk about a missing 411 type thing that happened to me many years ago on Exmoor a beast that i came across on a dark night.

Cherhill White Horse and Oldbury Hill Fort - Cherhill White horse was cut out of the hillside in 1780. Oldbury Hill Fort is a neolithic settlement
Cherhill village - Cherhill Gang was a notorious group of highway men who operated in the 18th century on the London to Bath main road (A4) which passes through the village – they were noted for their robbery technique of attacking the carriages of rich Londoners while completely naked, thus shocking passengers into handing over their money and also making it harder to identify them.

Hi Richard, interesting stories, let me share one of mine with you. Many years back (early 1990's), my brother and I were hiking from Ross-on-Wye in Gloucestershire to Chepstow Castle just over the border in Wales. Apart from one night we were wild camping. We'd found a spot in a field on a hill over-looking Tintern Abbey. In the field was a hedgerow that ran the length of the field and next to the hedgerow was a dip in the field of around 4 foot that ran along side the hedgerow. We decided to erect our tents in the dip where we were pretty hidden from view. I had noticed an animal path that had been worn either by fox or badge and so we made sure that our tents were slightly away from this. It was around 12.30 at night when we was woken by a very loud BANG. We knew we were on a farmers field and so had most of kit already packed-up just in case we had to do a runner. As I got out of my tent calling to my brother to get ready, there was another loud shot. Peeping over the top of my tent I could see headlights of vehicle not too far from us and it also had lights on top of it. I watched a bloke walked past the headlights, pick up something from the ground and then walked to the hedgerow where he chucked it. He got back into the vehicle and drove off. We waited for a while and then, thinking that it would be okay, got back into the tents, though we did hear a few more shots after that. The next day I went and checked what he'd thrown next to the hedge, it was a dead badger. full of shot. I counted twenty paces back to our tents. If the farmer had taken the shot, 10 / 20 seconds earlier, the badger could well have been near our tents and with a shot gun, one of us could easily have been hit. I suppose it was our fault as we shouldn't have been camping there, but at the time it was also illegal to shoot badgers. That was too close for comfort.

Richard, really enjoyed hearing about your winter camping gear and really really enjoyed your tales from the tent :-) The woman unzipping your tent was freaky - something i sometimes think about what would I do if I heard the zip moving in the middle of the night! I have only had trouble from a fox that took my rucsac and bit through to get at food - and came back a couple of more times even when i covered it with rocks, just a couple of feet from my bivy bag :-) All cool experiences :-)

'Getting your pen knife ready.' Ha ha! I enjoyed the stories Rich. The farmer offering you rabbits was pretty cool. I imagine that going home with some cony's in your sack. Good going mate. All the best for the week ahead. Mark

Interesting hearing your wildcamping experiences Richard, the beast on Exmoor would have deffo spooked me .... People ask me is it safe, I say I would rather be on a moor on my own than walk down a high st in town on a saturday night. TFS atb Dave

I had a fox sneak in my tent about 4am in the morning once, in Scotland, and it ran off with one of my shoes but fotunately dropped it about 50 yds away. Another time I was just finishing setting up and a whole family of wild boar trundled past the tent, near the Somme in France. Only time I've had any real fright was some Neo Nazi's who mistook me for a immigrant in Friesland in Holland, and I slept with the trusty 2 inch blade pen knife at the ready !
