I think you got the concept somewhat mixed up - the carrot is tied to the end of the stick with a long string and is held in front of the pearson just out of reach and kept at that distance as the pearson chases the carrot in the direction desired by the one holding the stick. It is not reward (carrot) verses punishment (hit with stick) but concept of future reward for desired present action

This is a classic example of how an ORIGINAL saying gets totally usurped and twisted to ruin the classic original meaning that DID totally make sense....OBVIOUSLY the saying right or wrong deals with beasts of burdens that love to eat a carrot ...BUT ORIGINALLY it was "carrot on a stick" The idea being simply to tie a carrot dangled from the end of a long stick from the seat on a horse or mule drawn cart or wagon the carrot dangled just out of reach in front of the beast whenever motivation is needed to get the dumb beast moving....of course the beast may never get the carrot it is just dangled as something so tempting. . It is easy to see how this got warped to include alternate whipping the beast with the stick which of course often works but if one thinks about it rewarding a stubborn beast by actually GIVING them the carrot will NEVER help....they will simply eat it and still not move. Which is why "the carrot and the stick" is stupid while "the carrot ON a stick" make the most sense and WAS the original saying

Can't count how many times I have used this method.since about the age of 8.it can be very effective and it can be very destructive.depends on how, who, and what you are using it for.only advice is use with caution and have more than just good intentions when doing so.
