Recently, the US shot down a Chinese spy balloon that had been violating its airspace for a week. Criticizing the military strike by the US, China said that it was not a spy balloon. It was a civilian balloon that was to be used for scientific purposes and it entered US airspace accidentally. Obviously no one is buying that statement. There is nothing new in Chinese spy balloons being spotted in the air space of other countries. This has happened many times in the past. It is not wise to expect China to respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of other nations. It is unclear how much information this balloon would have gathered after flying for a week in US airspace. The US has presidential elections in 2024. Certainly America's relationship with China will be a major election issue. Biden would not like to appear soft in front of Trump in any way. Hence it was necessary to send a message to China. The US waited for the right time to shoot down to avoid debris falling on the civilians.
