Naltrexone for weight loss: Does it work?

How to use Naltrexone for weight loss, how naltrexone helps curb appetite, and how to use it to burn fat.

Did you know that naltrexone, also referred to as low dose naltrexone, can help with weight loss?

It's actually an effective weight loss medication provided that it is used in the right way.

LDN or naltrexone or low dose naltrexone (all names for the same medicine) is typically used to treat alcohol dependence. But it was found that it can also be used to treat autoimmune conditions. Then later it was found that LDN also seems to have some weight loss properties.

LDN has very few side effects and it works through a different mechanism compared to other medications which makes it a great add-on for many people.

AS ALWAYS, make sure that you use LDN with OTHER weight loss therapies such as diet, exercise, and so on. Using it in this way is obviously the best.

We are going to discuss 6 ways that LDN (or low dose naltrexone) can help with weight loss:

#1. Naltrexone targets insulin resistance.

Insulin resistance is one of the primary drivers of weight gain and obesity in MANY people. Up to 50% of people in the US suffer from insulin resistance in some form.

LDN helps to drive down insulin levels which can help with weight loss.

#2. Naltrexone increases growth hormone.

Some studies show that naltrexone can also increase or normalize growth hormone levels. And because growth hormone helps maintain muscle mass and fat mass in balance, it will help manage weight.

#3. Naltrexone modulates your appetite.

Naltrexone also helps to MODULATE your appetite. Notice I said modulate and not suppress. It actually helps to reduce cravings for foods you shouldn't be eating and it helps you to eat the normal amount of calories you should be each day (instead of overeating).

#4. Naltrexone reduces inflammation.

Naltrexone ALSO helps to lower inflammation. Inflammation is a driver of fat cell dysfunction and weight gain by itself. So if you reduce inflammation you will help with weight loss indirectly.

This reduction in inflammation is also why LDN is often used to treat autoimmune conditions.

#5. Naltrexone improves your sleep.

Naltrexone has also been shown to regulate sleep cycles and to help improve sleeping patterns. Because a lack of sleep is associated with obesity, anything which improves your sleep may help with weight loss.

#6. Naltrexone improves and increases thyroid hormone.

I started at 25 mg a week ago and have now moved to 50 mg. But, it is for binge eating, not generic weight loss. I would describe my experience like this. Picture a bunch of mountain peaks. Those mountain peaks are analogous to those moments when the food is in my mouth and I'm getting that rush after rush from eating all of that delicious, fatty, carby, sugary food spoonful by spoonful. Now, imagine a giant saw coming through the mountains and cutting off all of those peaks and leveling them out more. That is what Naltrexone feels like to me. I don't get the cascading rushes of whatever neurochemicals are activated while eating regardless of what I eat. I can stop now at half of my plate. I don't feel compelled to eat every last bite regardless of whether I'm full or not. I don't feel driven, if you will. I feel like I can say no and stop when I need to. Also, for others who might read this, I took it one time during the day and was light headed and really tired. I switched back to taking it at night and I don't have any of those side effects the next day. YMMV

I will say it defintley changes your appetite habbits. When I get a bit of a craving I'll eat and enjoy my food but almost instantly after, I am satisfied and stop craving. It does work.

20lb 5 months. Taking for long Covid 1.5 mg a day and it’s fixed my brain fog and energy levels. I wasn’t planning to lose weight but I’m really glad I did. It’s definitely changed my taste and food I’m not craving unhealthy stuff like I was.

Thank you for being the only person on the Internet that described it well.

I took Naltrexone at 50mg daily for alcohol using the Sinclair Method. Now my craving for alcohol is all gone and lost 14 pounds. My pants size went from 12 to 8 (over 50 years old female). I’m thrilled about it!! I feel fortunate that I was able to discover Naltrexone and the Sinclair Method. Changed my life !!

My doctor started me on 50 mg about a year ago. My blood pressure shot through the roof and I’ve never had high blood pressure issues. I’m going to ask her to try a low-dose version. Thank you so much for this information!

Best video on weight loss and Naltrexone I have seen. I am down 49 pounds in 5 months and now in healthy BMI. I could not have done it without Naltrexone. I am on 50mg split in half. One half in AM and the other half in PM. It is definitely an analgesic. I also take Anastrozole pills and Prolia injection for treatment of BC. Both these drugs have terrible side effects of joint pain, and muscle pain. Since taking Naltrexone, I have been pain free!

I just came across this video after starting low-dose naltrexone for chronic pain. One of the first effects I noticed of this medication is that I wasn’t getting a “hit“ after eating. I didn’t realize until I started taking this medication that I get some kind of emotional reward when I eat. And I would find that I would often over eat. In the last couple days I’ve simply put my fork down and pushed my plate away because I was done, and that is very unusual for me. I didn’t feel like I needed to eat everything on my plate, and I didn’t have cravings for sugar like I normally do. I’ve always been a normal and healthy weight, so I’m not worried about weight loss, but I’m coming to believe I might’ve had a little bit of a food addiction that I was completely unaware of. It’s not that I enjoy food any less, because I still really enjoy the food. It’s that I had some kind of dopamine hit or some other kind of reward that was happening in my brain after eating that no longer exists, while I am simultaneously feeling much more content and happy with eating smaller amounts of food. It’s very interesting, and I actually really like it. I feel a lot better, and I didn’t even feel like I felt bad before. … I guess sometimes you don’t know you’re feeling bad until you feel better, and sometimes you don’t realize that you might have a problem with food until the problem you didn’t know about disappears. It’s very strange. 😂

I’ve taken this before and I dropped 10lbs in like 3 weeks. BUT it made me very nauseous throughout the day. It made me feel full quicker for sure. Thanks for this video!

This 100% changed the way I eat. I used this medication on 3 occasions. I noticed a change of appetite on all three periods. Most recently, I went to Golden Corral and became full so fast, regardless of barely eating anything on that day. If anything, the over eating made me feel sick. Recently, I ordered my most favorite food of all time, Lou Malnatis pizza. I could barely eat half of what I usually eat. Hell, it felt like a chore to meet my mental desire. Never experienced anything that serves as such of an appetite blocker.

I have been on a 4.5 mg dose for the past four months and it has really helped with fibromyalgia pain as well as increased energy. I was already on a low carb/sugar diet and had lost about 20 pounds, but I lost another 13 pounds on LDN and I’m feeling way less cravings.

Fascinating. I am using LDN for long covered but I have noticed several aspects of what you are referring to. I was borderline diabetic, and that has changed. I was one of those people that never wants to eat a green vegetable and can’t go weeks without one and suddenly I want one every day. I’m 69 years old and we’re talking about decades of cravings suddenly modulated. I feel a bit crazy touting this as a Wonder drug, but it really is fascinating.

I just took my first dose last night. I have hoshimotos, weight struggles and cronic pain from a back injury so when poking around online looking for something to help me change some food habits this sounded like something I should try. I am about 12 hours past my first dose just noticed a reduction in my back pain. I picked up my heavy computer bag, which usually hurts, and nope. Nothing. No pain. I also noticed my sleep was deeper, which could be why I'm not hurting. Maybe it's a placebo effect, because that feels really quick, but even so I'm happy with it. I can't wait to give my son a piggy back ride without having to quit because of pain.

I just started taking this in combination with Bupropion specifically for weight loss. Week 1 I’ve lost 5.5 lbs and I completely agree that it doesn’t suppress my appetite but cravings are definitely gone. I haven’t started an exercise routine but I am tracking calories and journaling on how I feel so I can track any long term patterns outside of weight loss. I’m very hopeful because at 43 5”4’ I need to lose 80lbs to get to a healthy range.

I'm on LDN for about 3 weeks now. I suggested it to my Dr for Fibro but now I'm learning it does so much more! All of the things you touched on I need help with so I'm very excited. I was pre-diabetic so I've been on Ozempic, Wegovy and Monjouro, none of which worked on me (for weight), I've spent thousands of dollars! Had to stop because of it affecting my organs. I'm hoping to increase the dosage next week as I haven't seen any signs of profess. I'm hoping that it does help my blood sugar as the other meds did work for that. I'm interested to learn more! Can I give you TWO thumbs up? This was a great video, thank you!

LDN has helped my Dysautonomia. I'm sure dropped thyroid antibodies too but since I had a thyroidectomy I was considered cured of Graves so docs won't test anyone. First I've heard of it for weight loss. Also cancer tumors have remained unchanged or shrunk by half. Just learned it's used for cancer too. I'm a 5 1/2 year survivor of lung cancer. LDN has narrowed the extremely low and high heart rate and blood pressure from Dysautonomia set off from cancer treatment. Been on it over 3 years. Loved this video. Very informative. Thanks

I started LDN two months ago for polymyositis. Not only is it helping with inflammation but also with weight loss. I do believe it reset my body weight.
