A new exhibition offers a glimpse into the captivating world of Alberta Sturges Montagu, the 9th Countess of Sandwich, and an American Heiress from the renowned era known as The Gilded Age.

Curated by Mapperton’s very own American Viscountess, Julie Montagu, the "American Heiress" collection is comprised of more than 10,000 previously unseen letters exchanged between Alberta (Sturges) Montagu and her family, as well as the peerage at large.

Dating from 1888 to 1951, these letters constitute the largest unpublished private collection of correspondence from the period. They offer a remarkable glimpse into the life of a "dollar bride" during the Gilded Age, shedding light on both triumphs and struggles.

The exhibition will explore Alberta's formative years in America, her upbringing in Chicago and New York, and the significance of her inheritance. Visitors will unravel the captivating courtship between Alberta and George Montagu, the future 9th Earl of Sandwich, leading to their marriage in 1905 in London. The narrative will culminate with her relocation to Hinchingbrooke House, the original family seat, in 1916 as the new Countess, following the death of the 8th Earl of Sandwich.

The exhibition takes innovation to the next level by introducing Alberta AI, a ground-breaking creation that brings her story to life like never before.

“With the aid of cutting-edge AI technology, we've resurrected Alberta's voice, allowing her to answer visitors’ burning questions about her remarkable journey,” says Julie Montagu, Viscountess Hinchingbrooke.

Make cushion pads, don't paint the chairs. Beautiful kitchen! Love it so much!

It’s PERFECT! Yes, on cushion pads. Absolutely NO on paint. The scattering of warm wood tones is so inviting, amongst the hard, cool marble.

Definitely don’t paint chairs as always chip and the wood is natural and lovely. Seat cushions brilliant idea. Go for it👍 Well done Julie you have created a wonderful home🥰

The kitchen is gorgeous! I’m so glad you didn’t paint the beautiful wood shelf, it is so beautiful and looks wonderful natural. I’m with many of the others commenting, make the chair pads, don’t paint the chairs, you will regret it as the paint will chip easily. Plus, you can change up the chair cushions with the seasons.

I love how it looks with the two large pieces of furniture swapped. The brown cabinet stood out like a sore thumb by the window. Now they look fabulous. The kitchen is fantastic 💜💜

No paint on the chairs! The natural wood looks so much better and authentic. Chair cushions will warm this section and provide comfort while sitting. Swapping the two pieces of furniture was a great idea! Good eye, Julie. The kitchen looks fabulous and you and the family will enjoy this for many years making so many beautiful memories ❤

Don't you dare paint the awesome chestnut shelf in the I know you don't care for matchy-matchy, but I would cushion the kitchen chairs with the same fabric that is under the sink. I would also stencil/paint some birds to match your plates over the blank white exhaust fan cover. It's a LOT of white as it is now. The large striped window curtains are brilliant!

The recessed hole in the wall it would look nice to have cookbooks so you can drink coffee and read recipes. A tea pot & cup/saucer would look nice on the top shelf.

I vote for chair pads. Either vintage fabric or maybe use vintage tea towels. Your kitchen is beautiful!
