GIS is better for smaller areas where insufficient space is available for an AIS compound. GIS is also better in built up areas (inner city) or areas with high pollution as normally GIS is placed indoors (in the UK) in GIS switchgear buildings. GIS though is significantly more expensive than AIS.
Mixed technology (hybrid) is just starting to take off in the UK and is suitable for areas with limited space for AIS connections, often on solar or BESS (battery energy storage system) grid connections. AIS is considered traditional technology and makes up around 80% of the electrical grid infrastructure in the UK.
