Tuesday 4 AM Tropical Update: Fiona a major hurricane, watching system in Caribbean

Hurricane Fiona continues to grow in strength as it passes just east of Turks and Caicos this morning. It's now a category 3 (first major hurricane of the year) and is expected to grow into a category 4 over the next few days. It will pass just west of Bermuda Thursday night into Friday morning before moving toward New Foundland, Canada this weekend as a strong storm.

A few other areas are organizing in the Atlantic and will both have a chance at becoming named storms. The first is an area of low pressure in the subtropics. It will remain in the central Atlantic and pose no threat to land.

The second area is a tropical wave approaching the Caribbean later this week and one we might need to watch long-term. It's already trying to organize more and could become a depression or storm later this week as it enters the Caribbean. The final outcome of this system is unknown as it's a long ways out and not organized. However, we have a lot of model agreement that something forms, and the steering currents could allow it to move toward the Gulf into next week. Overall, it's a long ways out, we need to watch it, but we have plenty of time to watch it and it poses no immediate threat. No reason to worry right now as there are still too many unknowns. The next names are Gaston and Hermine.

I think 5 days models shows it more like 50% and both guidances show going into gulf 7-10 days models favoring cape coral hit -tampa as hurricane. I am concerned ...it can wobble but it is concerning

It is not moving North North West, Nor is it moving North west or North. It is moving West North west. If it was going North or North North West it would have missed Turk & Kaicos islands after Puerto Rico..
