WOW!!! I met Jimmy Heath in Montgomery Alabama while in undergrad at Tuskegee. My band members road tripped to see the Heath Brothers. Fantastic and well worth the gas money.

Thank you WDR Big Band for recording with Jimmy Heath and documenting one of our jazz legends in action. With the recent loss of LA trumpeter Jack Sheldon, we are reminded that the music and the stories they told will live on. Terry Gibbs is 95 and younger guys Benny Golson, Curtis Fuller, Sonny Rollins (and I hate to leave anyone out) are still with us. So, let’s celebrate their legacy too.

I'm so proud to be from Mr. Heaths home town Philly. I first came to know of him from the 80s when he and his brothers did the Brothers and Others album which I loved. To say the least in Philly he and his family are beloved.. All in all it was a blessing have had this genuine legend with us for 93 years.. I know Little Bird truly has wings....

What a punchy arrangement. The true Heath swing carries on through four terrific solos, including an exuberant Shannon Barnett segment. Love it when the body language of musicians reveals being influenced by the groove.

I was fortunate to study saxophone with Jimmy Heath at Queens College from 1993- 1995. He was the nicest person and a very encouraging teacher! We were so fortunate to play his great arrangements in the big band there. This is exactly the way he was, smiling and enjoying, and he knew every note in the arrangement! Sometimes he would stop and say "Third trumpet, that's a B flat in bar 39"... :-)
