It's really an own-goal for Hyundai, BMW and others to be openly charging these kinds of prices. I nearly bought a second hand 2018 Ioniq recently until I phoned up the Hyundai dealership to get a quote for a replacement battery pack in case it went wrong. That quote ended my purchase of the second hand Ioniq then and there.

Battery packs should be modular so that consumers have the option to replace or upgrade them as better batteries are developed.
Power to the consumer!

Recently in the news here in Canada a guy had his battery fail in his 6 year old hyundai just out of warranty and the replacement cost with labour was just over 50000 Canadian dollars...

I spoke directly to Nissan NZ about battery replacements when I was on the cusp of buying a 2nd hand Leaf. They told me in no uncertain terms that they will never supply a New Zealand customer with a replacement battery. The end. Seriously. No estimates, no alternatives .... just a big fat NO. In Australia, a gent by the name of Phillip Carlson was famously charged $33, 000AUD for a leaf battery by Nissan themselves.

I would love to hear anyone elses take on this.

it costs 60K CAD to replace the Ioniq 5 battery in Canada.

Yes but a dealer in Queensland tried to charge a Nissan Leaf owner over A$30, 000 a couple of years ago. It was all over the Australian news at the time, this certainly didn't help Nissan sales.

Surprised companions making aftermarket replacement batteries haven’t sprung up yet, it’s only a matter of time until it’ll be possible to buy and put a CATL Qilin battery pack into an old Chevy Volt or Nissan Leaf and quadruple it’s range.

It is starting. It is possible to open damaged battery packs and replace a broken single battery, or even all the single small batteries inside the pack. Soon I believe we will see companies that will be certified to refurbish old battery packs. And perhaps even exchange the batteries from NMC to phosphat or sodium batteries. This will be a whole new business. Different producers of the small batteries already excist, both NMC and phosphat, and probably soon also sodium - lf not already. As a consequense, new batteries and battery packs will become much cheaper due to competition, and no more monopoly by the car brands. Already now a few startups in Northern Europe has started planning for this.

I have seen 2 cases on YouTube where Kia in Canada has written off Ionic 5s and charged charged $60, 000 to the owners where the damage to the pack is very minor and no errors reported by the vehicle . It makes me want to stick to ICE vehicles for now .

Just paid 3, 200 USD for a new battery for my 2012 Toyota Prius (4.4 kWh?). This was at the dealership.

Is why I'm holding on to my 2009 Octavia, 14 years and going strong.
Better pay the running costs of an old car than paying a fortune for an EV.
Of course an old car is no status symbol but I prefer early retirement to showing off to the neighbors.

Still a better deal than manufacturer’s ink jet cartridges, right? :D

Anyway, and this is everything from printers to buying a house, make sure you research the *ongoing* costs of a purchase, not just the upfront costs. These companies can charge for a battery because customers don’t look beyond the initial purchase of the car. Thanks for the video and awesome pic on the wall! (:

Well for me Sam I am not a fan of EV's and I think that if I ever was made to have one - which I could never afford from any aspect of owning one the cost of a replacement battery would bankrupt me as like so many others like me who are on a pension for an example. Plus the cost of buying insuring one, the cost of the tyres which I gather wear out three times more frequently than ICE powered vehicles and require "special" tyres at that, and the risk of fire within the battery is simply not an option. To boot the wait for the vehicle to charge up would simply drive me (no pun) quite insane. I did note that you talked of the cost of battery replacement is quite reasonable but to me like may others who have a limited income ie: on a pension that cost is simply not a situation that we could afford.

Thanks Sam. If batteries cost less than $100 US per kilowatt-hour there's absolutely no excuse for squeezing customers for over $700. They're taking the Mickey, big time. Extortion is a crime. Period.

RECENTLY IN CANADA HYUNDAI IONIC 5 battery replacement cost the owner 60000 Canadian dollars. HIS car was just 1 year old he scraped his car underbelly somewhere and the battery got damaged. He tried for a warranty but was denied because of its physical damage. The insurance company will write off the car since repairing it is higher than the value of the car.

This information needs to be on a single one page table so we consumers can see what is being offered.

When asking for a price of Nissan Leaf battery replacement in Finland, they quoted very high prices, so this is not uniform, but varies country by country. Currently replacements are third party and they use used batteries from totaled cars, as there are no new batteries available at reasonable cost.

My 2018 ford focus electric has 95000kms and battery now being replaced. In discussion with the dealership they say the cost of the pack is between 5-8k for the 33kwh pack not including teardown and installation. Getting it done under the battery warranty, but I am shocked that it failed so early.
