Sony Xperia 5 III | All you need to know

Sony unexpectedly launched the Xperia 5 III at the same time as the Xperia 1 III, offering a more compact form factor but almost the same camera tech, specs and features. This isn't quite flagship and is less of an upgrade vs the previous gen, but this looks like one of the best 'mini' smartphones of 2021. Ahead of my unboxing and review, here's a squint at the specifications and new bits of the Sony Xperia 5 III, so you know what's up.

The camera lenses are identical here to that 1 III, although you don't get the ToF lens for improved real time tracking. But Sony's eye tracking smarts are on board and you get that upgraded zoom lens, with dual focal lengths.

Performance and gaming features are intact for the Xperia 5 III although you get less memory here, as well as storage. But the display has been downgraded from 4k to FHD+, which makes sense given the compact 6.1-inch form factor. You still get a 21:9 finish with HDR smarts and a stereo speaker setup.

Where Sony go wrong on all their phones is by waiting months after product launch before bringing them to market. Do they think by having huge wait times we will get fever pitch excitement levels building like used to happen in the queues to Apple stores following launch? Definitely not. I love Sony products but wait time is rediculous and in that time people just move onto something else. Sony need to learn from Samsung here. When they announce a product it needs to hit market two weeks later or all that marketing hype is lost. I wish they would learn that....

This sd card vanishing act that is becoming standard is pretty alarming, I don’t feel that it has been highlighted or complained about enough.

By the time they release these phones all the other flagships will have dropped in price by 25-30%
