Barry Humphries: Dame Edna Everage creator dies

He was best known as the creator of the gladioli clutching Dame Edna Everage, and vulgar cultural attache Sir Les Patterson - the comic legend Barry Humphries has died at the age of 89.

Among the many tributes, Australia's prime minister Anthony Albanese described him as the brightest star in the galaxy, and an absolute one of a kind.

A very sad loss. Barry Humphries was a comic genius. To have played Dame Edna Everage and Sir Les Patterson so convincingly and so differently demonstrated that he was a master of disguise and comedy. As many have already said, Dame Edna was one the most hilarious and unique characters there is. Whilst obviously planned, the clip showing Dame Edna in the Royal Box with the then Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall, and Humphries' ability to be unfazed and still deliver Dame Edna's classic acid tongue one liners, demonstrates his professionalism as an entertainer. He was a very clever man. A truly sad loss to the world of entertainment.
