Yes, the sails are functional. Many of the crew, when not at Burning Man, are trained to sail real life frigates and other large sailboats in the real life ocean. Some of them were consultants for the film "Master & Commander".

In this video the Monaco is moving by the power of the wind and wind alone. It is literally "sailing" the desert. It's incredible, magical and hilarious to witness and be a part of.

hey I heard that sail power art vehicles are now banned... what's the story? what happened? was it this ship or another? I guess it would be difficult to stop something with this many individual sails?
