WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW WHEN CRUISING DURING HURRICANE SEASON.
We ar now into Hurricane season in the Caribbean and parts of the United States and Canada. Many cruisers biggest fear is getting caught in a hurricane on a cruise ship. However cruises might be the safest place to be during hurricane season as long as you keep this tips in mind.

If you want to hear about a hurricane, I was in Bermuda in 1985 on a cruise! I was there in September in 1985 when hurricane Gloria was coming up the coast! We left Bermuda on Thursday when the storm was coming up the coast! We were the only ship that left Bermuda that day! Our ship was a so called flat bottom boat! So they left port and headed back to New York. We were the only ship that left port! We went further out into the ocean to miss the storm, but we were on the wind side of the storm! Our waves were over 55 feet hiigh, all the way up the coast! The ship was rocking and rolling all the way up the coast on Friday! Out of the 700 passengers on the ship, there were only about 35 people that went to lunch that day! I was one of them and had a great time! Went to one of the bars for cocktails and if you were able to sit there, the drinks were free! The bartender was wearing a life preserver! Made me feel comfortable!!!! If you were able to sit there, all the drinks were free!! I never left!!! LOL I remember taking a shower and when the ship turned while I was taking a shower, I came out of the shower and hit my head on the mirror. Little bruise! Only damage! Went to dinner and to the lounge to dance and remember one of the band members playing a horn and almost swallowed the thing!! But, I had a great time! I have been on 17 cruises and this was the most memorable ones. Even though we went further out into the ocean to avoid the storm, we were in the wind side! We ended up getting back to New York harbor about 10 hours late, but we had another great lunch for free! But the other ships that staying in Bermuda, beat us back, but I had a great experience! Loved it and hope to be in another storm soon!! Yes! I am nuts!!

I’m fine with a rocking rolling ship. Last cruise we hit the tail end of a cyclone and we had really rough seas. None of my party were sea sick but many other passengers were. The funniest thing was being with my 89 yo mother and helping her walk around; a step forward, one sideways, another forward, one back etc. we were both in fits of giggles. Mind you, I had had a hip replacement just three months prior.

The only good thing about hurricanes is that you have warning. So, you have time to get out of the way. Unlike, tornadoes for us here in Texas.

I was in a big storm that the ship could not get out of. We had waves even breaking the bow; however, I slept great being rocked to sleep. I was in the US Navy and on a carrier.

Hi Don. Wife and I were scheduled to go to Canada last September from Baltimore. Royal Caribbean redirected the ship south instead, due to severe weather. RC gave us the option to accept a full refund, less insurance, which we took. VERY nice of RC! We're trying again this August. Wish us luck !

We are cruising out of Galveston, Texas at the end of September and I was apprehensive but after listening to your video, I’m all happy inside. Thank you Don.

Yes I have experience. My first cruise on carnival miracle out of Tampa. We went right into hurricane Michael. Captain shielded ship by getting behind Cuba. It was crazy !

My last hurricane season we did not get into Bermuda and ended up on a cruise to no where on Carnival Venezia. But we knew that going in.😊

I always travel during hurricane season. I am more concerned about canceled flights than cruising on a ship

On carnival you can sign up for text alerts for any changes on your cruise

Hurricanes are nothing to mess with - I am sure the ships are always very careful and take good care.

We ran into a hurricane off Mexico in 2021 on the NCL gem. As a result, a stop in Mexico was cancelled and we went to Belize City instead. We loved the Belize City excursion.

I live in NE Florida. My cruise strategy during Hurricane Season is only take 3- or 4-night cruises as this narrows the weather window to improve chances of avoiding storms. We take longer cruises in December and April.

We’ve had a couple of cruises that sailed around a storm. Bad waves but I still felt safe.
