Holy hells.

Genuinely, I don't have the words for how cool this is. The expressions, the sheer HORROR on Homura's face. It's perfect, and really captures the essence of her.

To Akemi Homura, Madoka's ascension is beyond even a worst case scenario. It is her every nightmare, her every failure come back to haunt her. All she has ever wanted is for Kaname Madoka to live. She'd give her life for it, if that was ever needed. So long as Madoka survived, Homura very much had truly convinced herself any cost would be worth paying in the end. Even if she hated her in the end, though it would break her even more than she already had, so long as she lived Homura would have given up anything.

Yet in her ascension, Madoka ceased to be. Madoka left her behind. How cruel that is, to be alone in a world without her. She spent twelve years in the loop making Madoka the center of her world, and she could never accept a world without her. Sure, she'll survive, but never in that world will she truly live.

She has no way to mourn, no one else remembers her except a child too young to ever understand. And in that world where Kaname Madoka could never be more than a myth, where her voice could never again laugh or cry or coo at the cat she once gave her soul to save, Akemi Homura is trapped. By duty, by memory, by regret, by love. She will fight, she will survive, she will protect that world, and every moment of it will be empty. Even with the chance to reconnect with Kyouko and Mami, her life will always be hollow. She staked too much of her Soul on Madoka to ever recover in a world withou her.

Madoka's ascension was a betrayal. Of Akemi Homura, of her family, of those friends she had not yet lost. All of them, whether they know it or not, will never again feel quite right. There will always be a shadow, a sense of deep loss. An empty bedroom that hurts, somehow, to look at. A routine order for three, made by a green haired girl mourning only one dead friend. None of them will ever quite know why, bar one, but there will always be an emptiness to their lives, left behind as they are.

But the greatest betrayal, still, is of Akemi Homura. All she gave, all she suffered, all she begged and pleaded and cared. All that, merely to be left behind by that precious girl. All that, yet that Goddess did not bring her with her when she left that world. All that, and still none of it was worth it in the end.

Akemi Homura has a right to be bitter, in the end. Has a right to feel betrayed. Has a right to regret. She would never admit she does, and even less so admit she has that right, but she too deserves her Wish to come true. And all she wished for was to protect that precious, kind girl from the forces that would use her.
