The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali contain 195 sutras organized into four chapters: Samadhi Pada, Sadhana Pada, Vibhuti Pada, and Kaivalya Pada. It expounds Yoga philosophy, one of the six orthodox schools of Indian philosophy. The munitrayam of Yoga is Patanjali, Vyasa, and Shankaracharya. A deep and thorough analysis of the human mind, the psychology of samskaras and the method of Ashtanga Yoga are some of the many unique contributions of this text. Swami Tattwamayananda will be teaching these sutras in the light of the traditional Sanskrit commentaries. The recommended text for this lecture series is “Raja Yoga” by Swami Vivekananda.

This series of lectures is hosted by the Stanford Hindu Students Association and given by Swami Tattwamayananda, minister of the Vedanta Society of Northern California, San Francisco. These videos are being cross-posted on Vedanta Society of New York's YouTube channel.

Time: Sundays at 6 pm PST

Dear Vedanta Society of SF, please have someone revisit the technical sound aspect of the videos. The room has alot of echo & I think the sound quality could be greatly improved. These are precious & wonderful teachings & lectures; they deserve the highest quality. Thank you Sirs.

Swami Venkatesananda, one of the direct disciples of Swami Shivananda Saraswati of Rishikesh, did a line by line translation of Patanjali's Yogasutra. He is very articulate and wrote it based on his own experience. This book is the best translation one can get from the recent past. I very highly recommend it.

Thank you Swami Tattwamayanda. I have immense gratitude to you and the Vendanta society for providing this opportunity for me to learn this incredible knowledge on the sutras. I’m eager to learn more and continue learning from these videos. My teachers are so far away from me that I feel disconnected from my own practice sometimes. This brought me a sense of comfort. Om hari om. Thank you.

Wow, the English subtitles are really surprisingly excellent! Highly recommended for people like myself who work harder at listening to accented English. Also helpful to see the Sanskrit words written out. Hope that helps someone. I absolutely love this series and this Swami. Highly recommended.

I would love to listen to these, but I'm not sure if it's his accent or his delivery or just the sound, but I can barely understand him, and neither can the subtitles.

I didn't understand the part where you talk about reading a desiring book in the library but can't do it

This first of the series is hard to understand because of not-understood words and technical breaks in the recording. The result is incomprehensible for the lay student.
