Learn how to classify conic sections. A conic section is a figure formed by the intersection of a plane and a cone. A conic section may be a circle, an ellipse, a parabola, or a hyperbola. The general equation of a conic section is given by Ax^2 + By^2 + Cx + Dy + E = 0.

When given the general equation of a conic section, we determine the type of conic section using the following characteristics.
For a circle, the values of A and B in the equation must be equal. For an ellipse, the values of both A and B must be positive. For a parabola, either A or B is 0, i.e. there can only be one squares term. For a hyperbola, the value of either A or B is negative.
