You are right. I knew when I was a child that's all I wanted to do is play music I'm 50 now played in many bands did some touring and played hundreds of nightclubs over the years that's all I have ever wanted to do even though I've had to do other things to make money. Looking back if I went to college and had a different career I would be in a much better place in life financially I have struggled a lot to keep the flame going which I passed on to my sons. I do not regret the path I took. It has been one of the most difficult Journey's to get as far as I've been. But it's like a moth to the flame it is in me and always will be. I still play to this day night clubs I'll know it's getting a little harder to do so once I start playing and the magic happens it makes me remember how blessed I am to have music in me! Thank you for the video 🎸

As a musician, I often feel exasperated because the quest of finding a place in this world never seems to end. Thank you for articulating my sentiments.

I spent many many years turning my back to music. I was scared to end up playing in a bar until I just couldn’t anymore then die. I wanted a family and financial security. About 7 years ago I felt that my love of making music is gaining more and more power and momentum. Now I’m 55 and since one year I’m doing music full time. As a writer, producer, mixer in my own studio. Literally every single day I say what an a** I was for not trying this earlier in my life. Nowadays I don’t just get in up in the morning, I jump out of bed! May be for me it had to be this long road… I don’t care, the main thing I’m doing it!

I used to sing and play guitar in a few different bands with my friends back in high school but it never worked out. I'm 22 now, I've given up on music, I've watched my friends find huge success in the bands they're in today, and it depresses me because I gave up on my dream and they didn't and look at me now and look at them.

When music is centered around income, it will be a very discouraging experience. I played for cover bands all over Southern California. Each gig paid around $100 for three or four sets of music. Sometimes they would cover the food and drinks and that was a plus, but usually I paid for the gas, my own food and drinks, so at the time it was more of an escape than anything. There’s nothing more fulfilling than to play what you love and to find your zone, meaning what your best at and explore your gift to the fullest potential. Likely you’ll see no income from it, but you neither saw income from a good golf swing, good dance moves, or even If you’re a master at chess. The only thing to pride yourself in, Would be your ability to get in that feel good zone, with music you can relate to and love. If Music is your business and your love, you better be pretty damn good, and know a few important people. Problem is the feel good zone comes and goes. The depressing part of the business side is the low income, high expectations, and the rarity of a good gig.

Some people do music because they “can’t live without it, ” others because they would rather not. Both are just fine. It’s also ok to ask your teacher about becoming a musician, doesn’t mean you’re not meant to be a musician if you ask. Seems to me he’s highlighting some odd things here that are not getting to the heart of the question.

It's ok to strive for it but be smart about it. Some of you out there (including this writer and vlogger) have the artist aspiration. You have been told by the very few who made it to believe in yourself and never give up. Well the simply fact is the arts are very different than any other profession. Because usually--someone else has to let you in. Now what I would tell you if you are 18 or 40 and feel that your destiny is in the arts? I would not tell you to just stay the "safe route" and give up on your dreams. I would tell you to pursue the artist aspiration smartly. Get another trade that you at least like. So the agents of industry never have you by the throat. You have to go to work anyway so you might as well have the job that pays well. I never went through the starving artist phase. I went through a starving student phase. So when I finally did pursue the artist endeavor I did it with a job I also like that contracts for 100K a year and four month vacations in Europe. That's how you go through being a starving artist. You don't starve at all. Hope this helps someone---Charles

So simple wisdom, but so on point and true. There are things in life where you know you don't have a choice. If you don't do it, you will die miserably. I'm not being dramatic, it's just a deep knowledge within, and who has felt it, knows what I'm talking about.

As a drummer im reliant on others. However im also a Photographer and in that there is so much freedom that I don't have as a drummer. Success or failure is all down to me.

Years ago, when I was still gigging, my father asked me to estimate what I made hourly playing music - factoring in personal practice, band practice, travel to/from gig, setup and teardown after gigs.
It worked out to be about $1.58 per hour. The musicians in an average bar band have thousands of hours invested in honing their craft. Even though music is part of all of ours lives, it is drastically undervalued monetarily. I stopped playing live and started home recording as a hobby. I have a day job - and I spend my nights and weekends creating music. I've found a happy medium. Respect to those still grinding for the sake of their passion.

Actually I don't think it's the music it's the demons with all they BS trying to make it harder and hate and be jealous because musicians has that God gifted talent and didn't have to go to school for it or pay for it

If you have the soul of the musician but without the mind of the capitalist, you are destined for a life full of struggles and pain.

I gigged for 12 years in local clubs. I hate the music business.

I can't live without music and I don't see myself doing anything else, but I just can't see myself as a professional because I don't like being the center of attention or think I'm special enough. Even though I love to sing and make videos, it's weird. So I'm just stuck being a dreamer, oh well.

There should only be 1 reason..the absolute and unconditional love for music!!! Songwriting, recording and performing is in fact like oxygen to many, a pain relief, an escape, a song can be like a bucket of emotions or feelings no matter if it's love, fear or hate and then there's the fact that when one makes a great song the dopamine reward is amazing😜
The one's who seek fame and wealth they're in it for all the wrong reasons n' even if they make it somehow they won't last...again this is MHO!
Btw I wish they'd use less compression cause I'm having a hard time concentrating on what is being said cause of your extremely loud nervous breathing noises...

Music is not about trade ..
We can talk about the form but not about the music
