'Invasion of Federalism'I In Modi Vs Kejriwal, Abhishek Singhvi On Centre's Ordinance I Barkha Dutt

In a late night ordinance, the Centre moved to reverse a Supreme Court verdict on the wielding of powers by the AAP's Delhi Government. The constitutional bench, headed by Chief Justice Chandrachud had ruled that "administrative powers must remain with the elected government"- giving the AAP the power to post and transfer civil servants. The ordinance reverses that. The Centra has also petitioned the Supreme Court asking for a review of its verdict. The developments comes days after the ouster of Law Minister kiren Riijju. The centre's supporters cite a reference in the verdict whereby CJI Chandrachud said that Parliament could enact a new law. .
Barkha Dutt speaks to eminent Jurist and Congress MP Dr Abhishek Manu Singhvi who appeared as the counsel for the Kejriwal government. Singhvi calls the ordinance "a stupendously graceless sign of a poor loser".. He argues that the CJI's comments on Parliament's powers to pass law did not ever mean abandoning the principles of federalism and the basic constitutional principle of bureaucrats reporting to an elected government. "If the BJP wants to change the architecture of how Delhi is organised- if they have the guts, let them pass a constitutional amendment"
