If you camp often, you should already know about this campground menace. If you don't know yet, you should watch this video and find out important information to keep yourself, your family and your pets safe.

The Blacklegged Tick, also known as the Deer Tick, spreads Lyme Disease to people and animals and it is one of the most common ticks found in Canada and the USA.

Lyme Disease is a bacterial infection that can cause problems with the nervous system, heart, breathing, balance, short term memory, arthritis and sometimes death. It is a potentially crippling condition and there is no known cure.

Early detection of Lyme disease is imperative as treatment in the initial stages can work. However if not caught early it is something you may have to live with for the rest of your life.

Good overview, some corrections and important additions.

Deet should not be put on clothes. It will eat through and destroy synthetic clothing. Use deet on exposed skin only. Icardin is safe to put on clothing though. You also missed out on one of the MOST important aspects of prevention, permethrin! You can now get permethrin clothing for adults in Canada at marks work warehouse. The military has been using permethrin imbedded clothing for decades and now it’s finally available for civilians. Permethrin is an insectide and everyone should own at least a pair of long pants with it. Europe and USA have been using it for decades as well. It really is a first line of defence item.

Also put all clothing that ticks may be suspected to be on in the dryer when you get home on high heat, it will kill them any you might have missed.

Great info. I also carry one of those sticky lint rollers to catch any ticks that are on my clothes after a day on the trail

Excellent info. While working for Ontario Parks in London a field botanist contacted Lyme disease. She had strange symptoms for years and it was not until she moved to British Columbia that she found a doctor who diagnosed the problem. Unfortunately it was too late and she suffered severe physical and mental health issues.

We've been camping as a Family for 20+ Years and never thought of a Tic Kit. Great idea, we have one now! Ugly weather in Waterdown ON today so we won't be using it soon but definitely will! Great Videos, Thanks!!

We too had a huge tick infestation on our dog at the pinery. I found 34 ticks on our dog on a thanksgiving weekend in 2020. He was on medication that year and did not seem to have any ill effects but it made me very conscious of checking daily when we are out walking. Thanks for all this information it is very informative and useful. Hope to see you around this summer somewhere.

Thanks so much for an extremely informative video. We love our provincial parks and we use them often but we didn't realize that ticks are a 12 month a year problem.

A great one-stop info for ticks, thanks! I think they are absolutely disgusting- but as the mom of the house, I need to know this. I will be making a tick kit for this summer for sure! I had no idea that you often have 36hrs before Lyme disease could occur, did I catch that right? Eases my mind a bit for heading to long point and pinery this summer.
