Praying Tampa based owners take the team and get it done in ybor. Rays fans will thank them

I am a Tampa local. JP Peterson is a former Tampa TV sports reporter from its local NBC affiliate. He now does a podcast show from what I understand. Some of what he reports hasn't been fully accurate, but I feel like he has sources that give him some info. I always take his reports as "cautiously optimistic" so I'd let it play out to see where it all ends up.

The Rays situation is a mess. Relocation might be only situation.

A 30, 000 seat stadium in Ybor would be the hottest thing the city has ever seen. Every game would sell out!

It will be interesting to see what happens here. My uneducated guess is that the Rays are done in St Pete. They'll end up in either Tampa/Ybor, Orlando, Raleigh, or Nashville. I thought that Nashville would be the favorite...until they spent $2B on the football stadium. No amount of money is going to fix the fact that the current site is surrounded by water on 3 sides and is difficult to access from Tampa.

If Sternberg can get $1.5-2B for the team I would think he would be happy with his $200M investment 20 years ago.

Vinik Sports Group to buy the Rays, and thank god if they do. Look what they did with the Lightning. It also makes sense that Vinik would buy the team. He sold most of the ownership rights to the Lightning, he owns a bunch of real estate around Amalie Arena, and if they build a ballpark in that Ybor area, it would make the Channelside area very important, and walking distance between both arenas in downtown. The amount of money Jeff would make off both teams, location, and amenities he owns around that area, yeah… it’s huge.

Thanks Brodie for your continuing coverage of the Rays situation. I think you do such a great job of summarizing all of the recent developments! Although I'm a devoted Phils fan, I wish the best for the Rays in the future and hope that their ownership & stadium issue get resolved soon because their fans deserve so much better.

I live in the area but I'm a transplanted Tiger fan so I don't really have a dog in this hunt. I will say this, if the team is sold and relocates to the Ybor site it will be a huge win for the fanbase. The Trop may have had some sentimental attraction to long-time fans but as someone who has been to a few parks I gotta say it was one of the worst I encountered in my travels. The only thing worse than the stadium was the location and the piss-poor job the St. Pete cops do controlling the flow of traffic. I gotta believe wherever they end up in Tampa will be superior and I imagine attendance will reflect that reality. Good luck Rays fans, hope it works out.

This is actually a good news the new stadium deal in Saint Petersburg didn’t really make any sense anyway

As a St Petersburg resident this would be awesome. Oh, and don't believe anything Stu says.

some afterthoughts:
1) what if it was a person inside the rays organization who leaked this?
2) does this ideal Tampa group have to BID against Orlando?

I'm one of fhe few fans who love the trop. Outside baseball in Florida is ridiculous. The amount of people at games won't change in Tampa cause most of the tampa people are transplants and will only go when their team is in town. And going north over to Tampa from st Pete at game time? Good luck

Not from the Tampa Bay area but as an outside observer, it seems as though building a stadium in Tampa/Ybor City is what everyone wanted all along. Hopefully this group with deep Tampa roots has the will and the know how to make this happen.

I have to say, I didn't see this coming, but given the history of the Rays, and everything it took to get this team, and how so often teams don't end up relocating due to a sale, it certainly makes sense. As always, Brodie, you are right on the money and your timing is impeccable. Great work.
