If you use a puckscreen, you can strongly under dose. I 22g basket and often dose around 18-20 depending on the beans. Dosing by weight is also important because ratio is one of the most part of dialing. You can decide the dose from how it fits in the basket (how most of use do it) but you need to know how many grams that it. Afterwards, you can single dose exactly that much for consistency.

Wasn't quite sure what was the defect you were trying to cure prior to your "by volume" realisation. Was it the flow rate too high or low ? "Spraying everywhere" on top of also suffering from channeling ? I took a look at your longer video which i believe is in reference to this Short, though with that limited angle of view i couldn't make out exactly which and which, so i'm guessing the observation could have been flow rate too high, plus channeling (also with "spraying everywhere"). I wouldn't quite agree with you on "going by volume thus eliminating ones less variable". First of all it's because how practical would you be in consistently measuring the volume - you wouldn't be able to stick a measuring tape in there to measure the height between the tamped puck and the top of basket. Secondly, every type of bean you're going through would vary in terms of the granule's density, affected by the effect of processing at the farm (level of fermentation, or not), the moisture level of the bean when it's done the drying stage during the processing ( there's a rule of thumb but each farmer would have their slight preference around it judging on the scenario), the roast level. Having set "a volume" in hope to eradicate the variables concerning these contributing factors, would not make much sense, very much in fact you're not eliminating any variable at all by way of volume. By the brew defect that you're observing, the counter-measure which you should apply is to judge which way you'd have to go next - will it be to reduce the puck resistance, or to increase the puck resistance. If the flow rate is too high, you'd next increase the puck resistance by applying "grind finer" and/or increase dosage, to find that balance. Now, if you're facing a slow flow rate with high spritzing and channeling, that's when you know you've gone past the threshold of grinding too fine. There's always the point of no return for having grinding too fine (channeling, spritzing) and that's when you know to meet the puck resistance you would need is actually to dial back towards coarseness, plus to increase dosage instead. Having said all the above, rounding back to your "by volume" control, if i may remind that the weight is also a product of volume, the way to track your shot by shot analysis, by way of "volume" is essentially also by measuring it in weight. In the end, you're measuring by weight, not volume. Hope i didn't confuse anyone here ..

Not crazy about spinning after tamping. Seems like there’s a chance of loosening the puck.

Can you suggest a carafe that works for the hario switch as well as the original Aeropress? Does the standard/default one for the hario switch work?
