An 18-year-old was killed at a housing development construction site in north Phoenix on Jan. 4, the police department said.

The incident happened around 2 p.m. at the Verdin master-planned community at Sonoran Desert Drive near 7th Street.

When officers got to the scene, they found 18-year-old Omar Marino Alonso with obvious signs of trauma and a water truck nearby with significant damage. Marino Alonso was declared dead at the scene by firefighters.

"It looks like the truck was operated by the driver. He just finished filling up the tank. It was heading down hill when the vehicle lost control and rolled over causing the driver to eject. He sustained significant injuries once he got ejected, which resulted in his death," Phoenix Police Sgt. Phil Krynsky said.

Police say speed appears to be a factor in this incident, which remains under investigation.

18 years old driving an extremely heavy truck. Probably not many years of education or training, probably not even a CDL. What could go wrong?

Such a sad event. This young man is out in the world working for a living, it's such a shame. Praying for this man and his loved ones.

From breaking ground to finished broken homes, they don't seem to really give a Fornication Under Consent of the King.

That is why 18 is not old enough to drive such big equipment. To immature with zero experience. Wonder if he had a tanker endorsement to transport more than 1000g of liquid?

Poor kid and his poor family, if he had one. One of two things happened, I reckon. Either he wasn't trained/instructed to wear a seat belt or, at his age, he thought he was invincible, like, "Oh c'mon. Nothing's gonna happen!"

21 AND UP SHOULD BE THE LAW FROM THIS CDL ACCIDENT

Sad fact are most of these accidents are avoidable . The most inexperienced workers being put on heavy equipment. / compactors /wster trucks lack of PPE. / traning.

For all those talking about CDL and Endorsements, you DO NOT need a CDL to operate a water truck on a jobsite. The company can require its employees to have one. But most don't. Although this might start to change things.

The vehicle going downhill and lost control? Glad it wasn't the 18 year old's fault. Ban trucks now before they all loose control.

It’s not accidental if he did not have his seatbelt on

Those trucks have super stiff suspensions because they carry 2000 gallons of water, when they're empty they bounce very easy if you go too fast, you got to wear a damn seat belt in that truck . 30 year retired commercial superintendent.

I thought you had to have a CDL to operate those. It's also up to the employees company to make sure the person operating heavy equipment is properly trained. I've been on sites where the foreman tells the young ones to cut corners and do things they aren't supposed to. They usually pick the inexperienced and naive because they don't know any better.

Being a semi driver. Water is heavy and moves back and forth. Water trucks have air brakes. He probably used all the air and lost his brakes

Not wearing a seatbelt is like not wearing a condom.

That community will need water..How about a water pipeline from Lake Superior to Wyoming, then put the water in the green river that runs to the Colorado river..They don't take the water for free they pay for it of course
