Today marks the 20th anniversary of the release of Figure 8 by Elliott Smith, the last release during his lifetime. I remember buying Figure 8 from my local record shop when it came out, and from the opening bars of Son Of Sam, I was hooked. I find there’s not much music that I loved in my teens that still resonates with me today, but those off-kilter beatle-esque melodies are still rattling around in my brain.

He had a way of grounding the raw expressive aspect of songwriting in deep craft in a way that few could match. The lyrlcs were visceral and fraught, but he had such a rich harmonic and melodic vocabulary that he seemed able to create music to underpin and ground whatever the world was throwing at him, and turn it into something beautiful.
