Floating Shelf | Easy DIY mounting

My parents asked me to build them a floating shelf under their TV for a soundbar. It should be one with a live edge and no visible fasteners. Since it hangs relatively low on the wall, I had a clever idea for a cheap and simple DIY solution. Bosch also has a sponsored part in this video because they sent me some sanding meshes of their new Expert line along with a battery-powered random orbit sander to test them with. I did some tests to see if the dust collection is as good as advertised.

Now that is what i call a proper integration of a sponsored item in a video~ I didnt even realize it was a sponsor section... but since its part of the process it was seamless

Greet idea, and you could easily make a small plug that would cover the tool access port on the underside of the shelf if you need to. 🙂

Damn, that's a huge hole just to tighten a bolt ;)
What I've done and works well in situations like that (and is invisible): angle the plate a little so that when you push down the board, it pulls itself to the wall (takes a few tries with adjustment). Instead of angling the plate, you can also bend the "flaps" of the slot a little. Or use a triangular slot and use a counter sink head screw. It has the same effect: the further you push the screw into the slot, the more it pulls on the screw. Both methods even allow you to level the board a little after the fact, because you don't have to bottom out in the slot for it to work.
What also should work (but I haven't used it for that and there might be a problem to lock it in place tightly): screw a threaded rod into the wall and stick the board with matching holes onto them. Then use a small screw from the bottom to lock the rod in place in the board.

Frohe Weihnachten!
Lord bless you and your family this coming year.

Lighter weight shelves can be tightly attached to walls using furniture cam-lock hardware. It works so much better than whatever they give you in the package.

IIRC, Mirka were the first to market with Abranet... excellent finish and dust extraction... lasts really well too. I've got some pieces of 80 grit that are about 8 years old.. well worn and probably 600 grit by now but they just last and last... The only disks I'll buy now are net type.

The nice things about the mesh is that you can use them as abrasive washing cloth when spent.

I like the idea of the bolt tightening pocket, but why not use a hex-head bolt that requires only a thin pocket for an open-end wrench?

How long before your parents ask you to cut a gap behind the shelf for those cables to drop through?

I bet Ikea are looking into hiring Keanu Reeves to "take out this Hornberger menace that has better solutions that are going to last longer and is showing the people what real quality furniture looks like."

Hope you have a grand holiday Marius. Love to see what you will make next.

The slot could have been made significantly smaller if you had cut down the hex key. You could have taken out 1/2-3/4 of the depth front to back by taking a cutoff wheel to the hex key and cutting all but a few millimeters past where the key straightens out.

Good job though. Looks good. I like the live edge and the fake live edge with a sanding disc on an angle grinder. Nifty trick. I will have to keep that in mind.

Moin Marius,

Welldone!
I like your mounting method and will copy it. I think I will cut short the allen key so less wood needs to be removed.

Great video! I would have liked to have seen more finished product shots at the end, it was kind of abrupt. 😅

Hello,
10:39 can you link the stl for the vacuum drill dust collector?

Thank you very much.

Your tape test seems like it shows reasonable results. You'd almost need a rig that moves the sander in a pattern for x amount of strokes to compare how much material is sucked up then compare the weight of the wood before and after kind of thing. I think it is important to know how much wood ends up on the floor or in the air.
