Donald Trump Wants to Veto the Historic UK-Mauritius Chagos Islands Deal: Reports | Firstpost Africa

Last month, Mauritius signed a historic agreement with former colonial power Britain. The agreement was to finally hand back the Chagos Islands to Mauritius after a dispute that had been going on for more than 50 years. But this deal is now under threat. The one person who can jinx the deal is none other than the US President-elect Donald Trump. As per reports, Trump is finding ways to veto the deal. He is seeking assurances that the deal should not be completed before he takes oath in January next year. The Keir Starmer-led UK government is trying to rush the agreement. London fears Trump would rip apart the deal. Watch the video to know why Trump could possibly jinx the historic Chagos Island deal.

Chagossian here. We should receive indemnities for being forcefully removed from our home. The UK has FAILED to do that for 50 years. Now that the ownership is challenged, they SUDDENLY bend backwards to sway our opinion ? Do not listen to the 100-200 people shouting on the roads, THOUSANDS of us do not forget how our mothers and fathers were treated for DECADES!! Mauritius has a right to the land, and they PUBLICLY said that part of the "rent" received from the US will go to the "Chagossian Welfare Fund" already set up. If the Americans want their base, thats fine, but at least, give our next generation a fighting chance. Many of us still live in poverty.

If Mauritius wants to give any of its islands to China, what USA can do? Mauritius can give any of its islands to India, China or anyone. It means that England and Mauritius should definitely enter in a negotiation with all geopolitical implications.

The Chagossians apparently do not want to be part of Mauritius. Further, Mauritius has turned into a protectorate of China, and the US is wise to be concerned about what China would do with access to the atoll. I'd say strike an agreement with the Chagossians to the benefit of both the UK, the USA, and the former inhabitants of Chagos.

Fist post Afrca‘s comments on the Chagos issue do not even mention the existence of the island refugees brutally removed from their homeland, shortly before independence was granted to Mauritius by the British ! The pretty lady & the expert focused on political., military and even US /UK private commercial & logistic interests. totally avoiding the humanitaria, economic and financial aspects of this purposely drawn out debate. Indeed, our former colonial power, fifty odd years on, is still successfull applying the divide and rule strategy, allowing only a few of the chagossian refugees & their descendants full citizenship & standard British passports . If some of them are being given assistance in Britain, others are still wating to return to their islands in Seychelles or Mauritius. Britannia still cruelly rules the waves.

Mauritius is paradise compared to other countries, Hindu, Christians and muslims live like brothers, please spare us, don't make us a victim in your geopolitical chess battles. We want nothing, just leave us alone.

Agalega another dependency island is placed in constituency number 3 in Mauritius with 3 muslim legislative representatives . Fearing the same fate, Chagosians want its independence from Mauritius to enjoy alone their archipelago as British in BIOT which must not be dismantled .

Seems UK only problem is Chagos. Why harping and harping on those islands and Mauritius? What happen to Ukraine? Why not talk how Bangladeshi are attacking hindus there?

In general, Democrats tend to support returning islands or territories when it aligns with international law, promotes global justice, and rectifies historical wrongs. They often prioritize diplomacy and multilateral cooperation in such decisions. Republicans, on the other hand, typically focus on retaining control of territories if they serve U.S. strategic, military, or economic interests. For them America is first ....They may resist decisions influenced by international bodies, emphasizing national sovereignty and practical benefits over moral or legal considerations.
