Honestly, it's much better to slowly search until you find a 1h tounament that hasn't started or has barely started. That way, even though it takes longer to join one, you will join a short tournament and join close to the beginning for a fair shot.

It works. Basically I noticed that after you do this a couple times, a list of 8-9 tournaments show up and the one at the top is usually empty! By the by, you do have to turn off Location

Eclihpse, the orange box around the tournament info means it hasn't started yet so you can join it easier than the green already started tournaments.

To add onto to that:
I found that the hand positioning means a lot.
I keep one hand's finger on the refresh button and then keep the other hand near the tournaments.
I like to always have a finger right where the join button is so I can just do a double tap right where the button is.

I know a better tip that just got even better because of your video. Keep refreshing until you have at least a chain of 2 tournaments that say 99/100 ( or whatever number -1) and choose the one that's farthest at the bottom because people are going to be doing what Eclipse is doing, so they'll be less likely to choose the last tournament, which means that you have better odds of joining
