In New York State, you do NOT have to link your EZ Pass transponder to your license plate and indeed do not even actually have to have a car. You can (and I have) get an EZ Pass and use it on a rental car by simply holding it up to the proper windshield area when you pass thru the now-CASHLESS electronic toll gates. Make sure the rental company's own attached transponder is INOPERATIVE at the beginning of your trip. You hold up YOUR own transponder usually right next to the rental company's inoperative transponder and the tolls will be electronically charged to your own, personal EZ Pass account. This can be done for all of the eastern/midwestern states that use the EZ Pass network.

When I was in Florida, I pre paid the tolls before I rented the car and then if I went over the amount I paid in tolls I was billed later.Perfect solution and the company I used was Hertz and they were great.

If you decline the car rental e-toll service make sure you don’t drive on any toll roads in Florida. They will charge you an administration fee for each toll incurred plus the cost of the toll.

I got hit with one of those license plate tolls. From my understanding the transponder does not work for the license plate toll am I correct? I flew into BWI airport to drive over to washington D.C.

I rented a car in Orlando area in December 2019. We went through three tolls which I paid the attendant each time. A couple weeks later and I get a bill for $9.99 administration fee for each toll I went through. Rip Off is what it is.

Bring your own tag.
Yes the tag is registered to a plate number. But as long as the tag is good it does not read your plate, it only reads the tag. I have taken my tag to Florida 3 times and used in a rental car. Worked fine.

Rental companies force the admin fees on you for tolls. I tried to get the required zipcode for the vehicle's registration to pay for my own tolls while on a Florida trip. The rental company refused to give me the zip code.

What are your thoughts on budget's etoll unlimited? They charge $11.99 per day plus the toll amount.

There are some toll booths in Florida that are un manned and if you did not prepay the tolls you coukd pay a large fine. So my advice is to prepay tolls with your rent a car company.

I went to Florida, My toll fee was $7.67, they charged $89.91 for administration fee for a total of $97.58!! Thrifty is a thief! Never again!

Florida is the worse state for toll roads. They are sneaky. They have tolls on roads that you don't even see. Then some of the rental car companies charge you a service fee and the toll to your credit card. Thrifty Car Rental is the worse!!! You're better off using Avis or Hertz, the car rental fee is a little higher than Thrifty but they don't charge you $10/a day for the toll pass and then bill your credit card for the actual amount of the tolls you go through. Their a total rip-off!! Don't use Thrifty, believe me, I know from experience. I had over $60 in toll charges on my credit card and I paid for every toll that had a booth. Hertz and Avis only charge your credit card for the tolls and no extra fee - so in the long run their cheaper!

This is outdated, yes you can use one transponder for all states and yes you can use yours, just change the license plate but remember to change it back when you turn your car in

Rented from hertz in Phila for 5 days and was charged an EXTRA $129 for the transponder (PLATE PLUS). Ripoff, shame on you Hertz .
