In today’s video we want to discuss of the tricks of the trade when it comes to properly labeling the hardware and wiring within an industrial control panel. There is currently no universal standard that is followed when it comes to how to label wires in a panel. However, there are some guidelines that we need to follow if we intend to meet the National Electrical Code, as well as panels that fall under the “UL listed” umbrella. The labeling practices I will show you today, are not necessary required, but are good guidelines to follow to ensure your panel is label properly.

Let’s first discuss hardware:
• Clearly label all hardware
• Make sure it makes sense
• Think of the end user
o Can they understand it.
• IP addresses for Radio’s and PLC’s
• List and Voltage or Amperage considerations
o Outlet

Wire labeling
• Establish a method
o To and from
o Same naming convention
 AC
 DC
 Signal
• Label orientation the same
• Easy to read
• Not too much info
• Size the label properly
• Do heat shrink until testing completed

Now that we have discussed wire and hardware labeling, lets talk about how me might label our cabinet is we intend to list the panel with UL:
• Main Panel ID Label
o Input voltage
o FLA
o Short Circuit Rating
o Fuse legend
• Wire Labels should match the drawing
• This is good practice even if there is no plan to list the panel

As I mentioned before, there are many different labeling methods that can be used, these are just a few tips that you can implement to make the labeling in your industrial control panel more clean and practical.

Me gusta, yo utilizo la Brother PTE550WVPZG1

y me estoy empezando a acostumbrar a rotular así los cables.
Un saludo desde España.

I notice that in most cases a white shrink is used, is there a specific reason for white say over yellow etc?

I'm a stickler when it comes to wire labeling. I know there's no set standard, but I always push that a wire label should read left-to-right or top-to-bottom after the wire end is terminated. Top-to-bottom just like a book binder.

The back plate labeling is required to match the name/description in the electrical drawings and documents..
