So I went ahead and bought 12ft poles at home depot for around $28, and an end cap to prevent water from getting in. Then dug a 2.5 ft hole and cemented the poles in. It was hard work, took me a good 2hrs of pure manual labor, but it was worth it.

Well thank you guys for sharing your talents and tips for putting up these lights. A good rule of thumb for setting poles is to bury them 10 percent of the pole length plus 2 feet in soft soils, and 10 percent of the pole length plus 1 foot in hard and rocky soils. This is how set depth is determined for utility poles.
