This is my programmable computer implemented in Conway's game of life computing Fibonacci sequence.

For everyone who missed it: it calculates the Fibonacci series. The results get printed to the little boxes in the bottom right in binary

It amazes me that something like this is possible, considering that:
* it's 2D, like a 1-layer circuit board
* it's asynchronous

I feel stupid after watching this video, but at the same time I admire its inherent beauty: how something so simple can become something so complex and purposefully versatile, given a few rules!

speechless. I was thinking about this myself some 20 years ago, I mean, that it finally must be possible to use "life" to compute or calculate things, but than I thought "who cares, we'll never find out, no one will ever be that crazy"

*You try to understand this.
*You cannot.

I've seen a digital clock running in a life simulation, but this is just on another level! Very, very impressive.

Teacher: "you won't always have a calculator"
Me: *pulls out bag of cells* that's where you're wrong kiddo

This implementation alone shows how computers can be so beautiful yet so infuriatingly complex.

The irony of using a powerful computational device with many layers of instructions fed to it to simulate a game, and game state that represents a much less powerful computational device. The loss of efficiency, immeasurable yet beautiful.

lets all say a prayer for this mans computer

This is the reductionist dream :P one of the craziest contraptions made from smaller pieces i've seen that was put together by one person. It makes me wonder on complex systems and how abstraction can help us comprehend nature.

The amount of time and adjustments this must have taken is incredible. Great video!
