Amid an increasingly deteriorating economic situation, Zimbabwean voters are heading to the polls once again, reenacting the 2018 election showdown between President Emmerson Mnangagwa and his dynamic and comparatively youthful competitor, Nelson Chamisa. Half a decade ago, Mnangagwa narrowly emerged victorious over Chamisa following the coup that ousted Robert Mugabe.

He embarked on his first term with a vow to confront the economic challenges head-on. However, issues such as unemployment, inflation, and the depreciation of the Zimdollar have persisted despite his efforts. While a total of eleven candidates are contending for the top office, the primary battle is between Mnangagwa of the ruling Zanu-PF party and Chamisa from the Citizens Coalition for Change.

In various impoverished townships within the capital, Harare, some individuals queued at polling stations up to two hours before they opened, concerned about potential lengthy waits. Chamisa's platform rests on pledges to reverse the country's misfortunes and reintegrate Zimbabwe into the global community.

He has also committed to combating corruption and ensuring a minimum wage in US dollars for workers. On the other hand, Mnangagwa asserts that he has made substantial strides in revitalizing the economy, partly through infrastructure development. He maintains that Zimbabwe's prosperity will flourish further under another five years of his leadership.
