Your painting of the dining room interior is very impressive. I don't know how anyone could get the details of all that furniture in perfect perspective without making a preliminary drawing on the canvas. My hat is off sir!!

I was very interested to hear of the prominent role of viewfinders in this discussion.

Do you have any practical advice for making them such as what sizes/ratios to keep/carry on hand? Are there any practical tips on how to use a viewfinder (how to hold it consistently from look to look, whether to clipping it to something, etc)?

These are probably the wrong questions, but I’ve noticed you often have wonderfully informative answers to even defective questions! Thanks Paul!

Many thanks for this extremely helpful talk, your answer covered exactly what I was asking about. If I understand correctly; setting up the location of the subject within frame boundaries, you use not only the major 2-3 effects / readers, perhaps located more to the interior of the picture space, but also reading areas (silhouettes) that BREAK the edge or frame (anchors points?). In this instance of the start, is there any difference between what you refer to as an anchor point and an effect? Except perhaps dominance of effects i.e. major, minor, least minor?

I was taught to start a still life with a brown paper drawing in full value working out the design. Crop the drawing and transfer major readers via tracing paper to a canvas sized to that crop. The location of sharpest edges having been worked out on the drawing which is about all you could see though the tracing paper anyway.

What exactlyis an "exit?" What is it's function in visual language? A way of implying context?

He rambles and doesn't speak in sentences, which is slightly irritating and makes it difficult to follow what he's saying.
