You are a total G❤. I hit some dead ends with 2 of my dream sff optiplex mobile gaming builds and you showed me the light And not only but blew it out the park. I also learned a lot of informational things. Thank you.

What's most impressive is the fact that you're getting sub 70-80 degrees on that 9700 under a Noctua L9i... even with the duct.

This is amazing!!! This is exactly what i needed to see, but i still need some advice - so basically i have an optiplex 3020 sff - right now i upgraded the stock components to an i7-4790, a nvidia gt 1030 ddr3 :( and 16gb ddr3 ram. Its ok but i am really looking for an upgrade. There are many circumstances i need to follow for this build but ill try explain: 1) i am getting really bad frames in games with my graphics card, but since the optiplex sff x16 slot is so close to the stock power supply, i am limited to a lesser performance slim graphics cards, bigger ones will clash with the psu so i need help with that so i can have larger better performance graphics cards that fit into the optiplex 3020 sff case. 2) also my optiplex has no wifi built into the motherboard itself, and i cant use ethernet in my home because my router is so far away from my pc, so i bought a wifi card which fit in the smaller express slot next to the graphics card. It still has horrible speeds :(. so i was thinking maybe, like how you did a cool build inside your optiplex case, i am thinking on doing the same inside my optiplex 3020 sff case, but instead of using the stock/original motherboard from dell, im thinking of making my own custom pc inside that case - im really thinking/want to do that! - now i want to do that because i want a motherboard with built in good wireless wifi that works well for my long distance router, and also a new motherboard so that the graphics card wont clash with the psu limiting space we have. And also a new motherboard means i can expand on a good cpu & ram as well for upgrading (as long as the motherboard supports/is good enough for it). Now this seems difficult, especially a different sized motherboard in a small sff 3020 case, i have no idea how to do that and what motherboard i should get let alone what components to get that actually fits all together while balancing amazing performance for gaming and good airflow and they all fit in the case. So yeah its a tall order but im in a mental block on where to start but i hope you/and anyone can help me with this ambitios project i really want to do! Your video showed me its definitely possible but i would love some advice on what and how i would do this! Thank you so much and sorry for the long essay😭🔥🔥

Awesome madman build! I have a plan on making this exact same thing, just with a different layout, and 7080 instead (i7 10700). Idea is to get a 5700XT (it'll go where the PSU is, with a riser card), a modular 750W SFX PSU (I'll place it where the DVD drive is, super tight fit but I think it'll work, and a power plug extender). Only thing I'm questioning is CPU power limit (it's getting a beefier cooler so no worries with thermal limits). I know that the 10700 can get very toasty with it pulling over 200W at full load (yep, whole Dell PSU, instant on a Z490 board, ) and at 4.7GHz all core. Now, the PSU and the CPU cooler are more than competent to power the beast, but that Dell Q470 board is worrying me. It seems like Dell might limiting those CPUs as Intel intended, to 65W max, which means this i7's all core turbo is not being used. Also, how did you plug the PSU to the motherboard? This OptiPlex I'm looking at only has a dual 4 pin and a single 6 pin which means the CPU probably isn't getting enough juice.

I love these little machines, small but not big. I am a fan of the Optiplex SFF build(s).

I personally own an Optiplex 3020 that has an Intel Core i5 4590, 4GB of ram, Intel HD 4600 Graphics, and 500 GB of HDD storage. I plan to upgrade it with a single slot GTX 1650 LP, 16GB of ram, and maybe throw an SSD in there.

Dude the computer looks great! Very curious how you'd be able to even think about getting a 3060 in there.

Wow, this is just utterly amazing. I had no idea such a thing was possible. I just copped an Optiplex 3050 SFF. I heard these guys can't use a standard atx psu, but I'm sure an adapter would work fine? After all, you did the exact same thing. My current psu for it is the proprietary 180w one. What are my gpu options? I was thinking about an RX 6400, or maybe GTX 1050. A 1050 would definitely be fit with some risers, you think? Would i need a stronger psu?

Miniflex. :-) I like it. I've been wondering how to upgrade my 9020 even more. This looks like an interesting way to go.

Wow. It appears you are CPU-bound at this point. No more GPU upgrades will be necessary (or produce better results) until you can get a better processor... and I believe that would entail a mobo swap at this point because you're basically maxed out already... congrats, you won the Optiplex.

Amazing build! Could a similar build be done with a Optiplex 7020 sff? I have one I want to turn into a gaming PC with a full size gpu. Been thinking about doing an open air build with an upgraded gpu and psu, but now I'm curious if it's possible to keep it in og case?

Wondered what your experience is with non-dell fans in Optiplex machines?

I have an optiplex 5040, and I'm using an arctic CPU fan and 3 arctic case fans (only 1 case fan header - so I've used a 1-3 splitter to plug all 3 case fans into the one case-fan header).

No matter what I do, all fans blaze at 100% - I've tried speedfan, HWInfo64, fancontrol, Argus, bios controls (which are basically max speed or system auto - either way they run at max speed) - all either have NO way to set a fan speed, or for the ones that do, setting the fan speed does nothing - they continue to run at max speed. I wouldn't mind, but they're just too loud and I don't need the insane cooling - the CPU especially runs cool even under load.

I assume the motherboard might only be able to correctly control a dell certified CPU/Case fans - but I'm amazed that I can't find ANY way to control them. Maybe a way to undervolt them even? For reference I'm running an i5 6500T which doesn't go above 28degrees idle and 50degrees even on an intense load - so I certainly don't need the fans blazing!

Have you had these issue?

I know that the xx40 and xx50 series have a more modern look, but have you ever worked with an xx10 series desktop? I have a couple of MT parts only cases that I thought about making Ryzen builds (possibly a 5700g until GPU prices get better) with NVME SSD.

Back to the desktop idea, do you happen to know if the front I/O has a standard connector for that series? The reason that I got the MT was due to uncertainty of the front I/O, and PSU. You’ve shown how to solve the PSU issue, thanks.
