Most things you're worried about getting on your straw are probably already on your lips, out in public air. However, yes it is cute and definitely effective against insects. I've had enough gnats in my cups... i started making little aluminum foil disposable covers for my straws. No more dead gnats in my drinks. So yes, this serves a purpose i can agree with.
