Terrifying Elephant Roar

Phuki is a rescued Asian Elephant from Thailand's logging industry, and now resides in Chiang Rai, Thailand. With chronic abscesses, arthritis, and a poorly healed broken ankle from his logging years, leg treatment is done every day to reduce the pain. Since Phuki is in musth, he can get agitated during these procedures, as evident in the video from his roar. Elephants will tuck their trunks in their mouths in order to calm down, so Phuki's mahout attempts to calm him down by touching his upper palate.

I live near the Zoo. The elephants roar like this every evening for some reason. It's like a ritual for them.

I couldn't imagine anything wanting to attack a animal that could produce such an amazing sound. A growl from crocodile is one thing but this a few bounds ahead of the game. Beautiful.

The "roar " you hear from elephants like this is not meant to intimidate, express anger or warn of an impending attack. It is a communication technique to find out if there are other elephants in the area.
The subsonics they produce with this rumble can travel for miles through the ground and another elephant will return the call to advertise their location in response.
Elephants are many time more sensitive to these subsonic frequencies than we are.
They are not displaying anger when they make this sound...They are merely being social.

That roar sounded to me like it could have come from a lion or a crocodile, simply amazing . I think there should be a bounty on anyone who hunts or helps anyone harm elephants.

Being one who has stood near them multiple times. The terrifying part is not that you hear it, it is that you feel it vibrating your body. Or it could be just me, quivering in terror.
