Climate and Environment sensitive approaches to human mobility and urban planning

The 6th Assessment report ‘Climate Change 2022: Impacts, Adaptation and Vulnerability’ by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) reminds us that the impacts of climate crises are underestimated, especially pertaining to the effects on lives and livelihoods globally. These adverse effects have been reported to exacerbate with further climate change, with growing adverse effects on
economies, ecosystems, and human health. With regards to human mobility responses to climate change, the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) recognises migration as a strategy for adapting to climate change and the Global Compact for Migration (GCM) also acknowledges climate change as a driver for migration and demands that we improve our understanding of and find
solutions for migration in the context of natural disasters and climate change. However, these human mobility impacts of climate change are not always straightforward and oftentimes internal displacement owing to climate change is not classified as migration. With rapid urbanisation and increasing human mobility flows into cities, climate change is severely impacting local economies at sending and host territories. This webinar focuses on effective local adaptation measures towards building a ‘more resilient global society in the near term and beyond’ as recommended by the IPCC report, with a priority focus on inclusion and equity of all residents.
