Incredible recording THIS is the way it should be performed.

I think, for young pianists, when working on this work, it is ten times more efficient to hear this recording than to go to a masterclass. Rubinstein show very clear what is essencial in this piece and how to display it.

Only 1 comment on the great Rubenstein....I must say I prefer to listen to him play Chopin but he really knew how to make the piano sing

Rubinstein had the longest piano career ever. His level in that age is still astonishing. Most of all he is even more near to the very essence of the music. True world class. Unfortunately the conductor doesn't match this level... What a pitty

To think that when Brahms first played this work - I think it was in Leipzig - it was booed or badly received.

Rubenstein uses more rubato in the first movement of this concerto than most pianists, and Haitink isn't always ready for it. An extra rehearsal would have helped.

Unfortunately, Rubinstein was past his best at the time this recording was made.
It's still a pleasure to listen to him, though.
