Inside the Secret Saudi-Israeli Relationship | Unpacked

On the surface, Israel and Saudi Arabia seem like sworn enemies, but behind closed doors they've secretly collaborated for decades. From covert aid during the Yemeni civil war, to joint efforts against Saddam Hussein during the Gulf War, to Saudi Arabia’s tacit support for the Abraham Accords, their “off-the-record” alliance has deep roots.

Despite public hostilities and the recent tensions surrounding the Gaza War, the mutual need to counter the shared threat of Iran keeps bringing them closer. The Israel-Saudi relationship has long been an open secret. The only question is when it will finally become official.

About Explainers: From ancient Jewish traditions to the modern State of Israel, we explain it all. Diving into anything and everything related to Jewish culture, history, and even religion.
Understand Jewish holidays, Israeli politics, Jewish diasporic communities, and more. Learn about Judaism in pop culture, debunking myths about Jews, and explore obscure Israeli landmarks. We’re asking questions as basic as “What is the Talmud?”, and as obscure as “How did hip-hop boost Kosher wine sales?”, and everything in between.

About Unpacked: We provide nuanced insights by unpacking all things Jewish. People are complex and complicated — yet we’re constantly being pushed to oversimplify our world. At Unpacked we know that being complex makes us more interesting. Because of this, we break the world down with nuance and insight to drive your curiosity and challenge your thinking.

6:57 "Countries have interests, not friends." Very true and succinct way to frame this

October 7th brought the relationship closer, not farther apart, it just can't be publicly acknowledged. When Iran retaliated against Israel recently, Saudi Arabia openly admitted to the media that it helped Israel shoot down the attack. That admission would have been unthinkable before October 7th.

As a Saudi citizen I hope peace comes to the Middle East as soon as possible.

The Arabs and the Jews are Brothers, they share a Father Abraham. Deep down they know it, the bond is sacred.

Interfaith dialogue, not money, is what moved the nations to work together, not only "money".

Thank you for such a concise summary. I hope that the Abraham accords can get traction and the moderates in the Middle East can benefit from them.

Everyone who isn't mush brained should understand frenemies and realpolitik. Geographical determinism cannot be avoided, internationalism is frivolous, countries need to work with their neighbours, not just rely on far away aide that never gets there.

You know, Saudi Arabia have so much power and authority in the middle East in which if they want, they can give back the lands of Phoenicia, Canaan, Judea, Samria, Reuban, Gad, Manasseh and Aram back to Israel.

The Ancient Greeks initially had the land of Canaan and Phoenicia (now modern Lebanon and some parts of Syria). As part of the deal, the Greeks gave the land of both Phoenicia and Canaan to the Israelites before those Mongols savagely took the areas of Mesopotamia, Near East, Persia, Constantinople and the Levant to be part of their Empire.

So the land of Canaan and Phoenicia traditionally belongs to Israel whether them Lebos like it or not!
