I'm a town planner in the UK and it is utterly shameful what has happened to our architecture. Architects are supposed to blend civil engineering with artwork. They have become no more than the civil engineers basing projects on floorspace rather than how they affect the wider area. Town planning has facilitated this, with our acceptance of bland concrete and glass constructs.

Omg some of Birminghams buildings were so beautiful. Absolute disgraceful who gave the order to knock them down. They had a glass ceiling train station too 😱

Modern architecture is basically there to make you feel miserable, it's not inspiring/admirable.

As building used to be beautifull in the past, people used to be nicer too.
Buildings we occupy nowadays reflects the emptyness within ourselfs.
What you see is what you get...

It’s genuinely sad, those buildings were absolutely stunning. If they were no longer safe/stable they could have tried to fix them without completely destroying the original designs for these modern pieces of trash that all look the same.

They tore down beautiful buildings to replace them with monstrosities.

Thankfully in Bombay they have left it as it is despite the greed of builders. The downtown with its Victorian buildings and huge grounds still looks far grander and important than skyscraper ridden Central Bombay.

I mean euston and all the stuff at my alma mater (imperial) weren’t by choice but were all destroyed by the German bombing of London. The UK was in a deep deep financial hole through to the 60s but still needed education buildings and train stations. Those sites shown are the remaining remnants of cheap but highly necessary rebuilds.

I was in south side hall as a warden during my masters and it was a shocking early 60s building but in the last 15 years has been rebuilt. I’m sure the same will happen when capital is available to make aesthetic decisions over functional ones.

I love modern architecture, but I've never understood why people destroy old buildings for modern architecture

The very first photo is from Bucharest and has a cool story behind it. The old part is a piece of history, containing bullet holes from the Anticommunist Revolution in 1989. The new part is the "modern version".

It symbolizes life & society moving forward, without forgetting the price paid along the way.

It is located in the aptly named Revolution Square.

I don't know whether to give this a thumbs up or down because it's great exposing this but it's so sad and you want to give it a thumbs down because it's so sad. All that beautiful architecture gone and it seems like they didn't save any space or really make anything different- it's just colder. And what happened to all that beautiful wood, stained glass, furnishings, paneling, carpets, plumbing... everything? what happened to it all? Did it go to the town dump? Did they get auctioned off? Who profited? Maybe that's why it happened?? It wouldn't be beyond the realm of possibility- that's why Henry the 8th took over the monasteries, nunneries, & churches to fill the royal treasiuries!
One other thing... This is just my opinion..Every time I see that Ferris Wheel smack in the middle of London, I think it's such a travesty. It makes London seem like a Circus: it's just wrong. It makes me squirm to tell you the truth.

I heard on British TV host say...if you wanted to design a building as a that summed it up.

I understand that tastes change, but too many people complain about modern architecture for me to believe this is just how we think we should express our culture.

They have to tear down our original structures and don’t forget all the underground structures

Birmingham needs more attractive buildings, not less.

Ornamentation, function, explorative of materials to sustainaility. Its architecture boils down to its emphasis.
